I just happened to be passing Bell and Colvill on Monday and took their 400 auto out. I'm not really a fan of them, driven plenty though not the Lotus offer. Was pleasantly surprised that in Race mode it was quite engaging to nip round the lanes and then drop into sport for the less energetic roads. Liked the little metal paddles too. Certainly it changed gear on the paddles as quick as our RS6 does. Still wouldn't have one myself ....but felt it didn't feel out of place and can see the appeal.

Can you help me out,  the 400 auto at B&C reg AU16 BCF - is this the one you drove?  Im a bit confused as on the B&C website it says red leather interior  and after a lot of zoom on the pics I think the seats are red thought the exterior shot windows- but on piston heads it says black and has close up pics of a grey alacantra trim.  Don't suppose you could clarify this for me please.

Sorry, half asleep! Thought you'd driven a 410!

As I understand it the lack of demos is due to Lotus withdrawing the dealer demo discount. The dealers are understandably standing their ground. I hope Lotus come to their senses soon, I'm convinced that the 410 is a car that will sell well on the back of test drives.

Quite a few members here, including me, are interested in one but, not unreasonably, don't feel inclined to take the plunge without a drive first.

AFAIK the only demo 410 was/is the one at Central, although that was the Lotus press car so was already registered. Silverstone even decided against registering one of their stock cars as a demo. So we have 3 sold to TLF member's or are there any more?

I like this Sport 410, I really do.

Even at nearly £80k I think it's got a lot to offer. Being a huge admirer of all things Lotus, I'd forego the Japanese reliability, 570bhp and extra straight-line performance of the brand new Nissan GT-R which starts at £80k after a recent price hike also.

But at nearly £90k I'm really struggling.

How on earth could it possibly be worth £20k more than an Evora 400?!

I'd want a sodding Evora Sport 500 for £90k.

Looks like my Sport 410 will have to be a used one.

That was my point previously.

Its £20k more than I spent on my 400, is it worth it? I dunno, to me, no I couldn't justify it. Not least the cost, but also the 2+2 removal.

However, I neeeeeed the bootlid!

Yes for my hypothetical next Lotus I think I'd be happy with a 400 (in Motorsport Green of course!) with the Carbon Pack and the forged wheels! A bit of weight saving and all of the items that most of the new dealer ordered 410's seem to be optioning back in anyway.

Same here re waiting for second hand. Had a price to change for the central car and not a chance.

These cars lose a large chunck in the first 3-12 months, so I'll wait.

ok £5k more for a Sport 410 I get,

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/lotus/evora/lotus-evora-400-brand-new/6778472

£83k for a 400, WTF?! Try trading that one back to the dealer in 6 months!

Car industry is trying to make hay while the sun is shining I reckon.

These prices are before any dealer discount... one can hope. Because a fully specced 400 list is around 80k, but from what I gather, no one ever pays that.

looks stunning in blue though...

Discounts are not what they were 6months ago.

with the removal of dealer assistance etc, the discounts are just not as easy to get.

i know this from someone who was quite seriously trying to buy a 400 (vs my experience when I bought mine)

Makes me think I was right to stay with my Evora S1 for the time being. I could not justify the my car plus £35k - £40k cost to change last time as the Evora is one of two "weekend play cars", and I certainly could not justify my car plus £50-57k for the 410, as good as that car is and as much as I want one.

I think my Evora will end up being a keeper, one that I turn up at LEGS drives at in 20 years and hopefully people will swoon over it the way we swoon over Esprit's now!

The £50 - £57k cost to change for the 410 would buy me a seriously shockingly good 2nd hand Exige 350 and in not too long a 2nd hand Exige 380 to sit alongside the Evora S1 in the garage. That would be a garage I'd be very happy with and a serious upgrade to my current S1 Evora/VX220 combination.

So I think the dilemma for many current Lotus owners is that the 400 / 410, fantastic as it is, and yes I would have one in a heart beat, just did not/does not move things on enough for many Evora S1 owners. We've seen a few move up from S1 to 400 ownership, but not the wholesale exodus maybe we expected and that is in part due to the fantastic ownership proposition the S1 is with regards to residuals, cost of ownership and running - in other words the smiles per pound.

Indeed, we are seeing a number of new to Lotus owners moving in to a 400. I believe a fair few VX220 owners for instance have moved up to the 400.

However, for new Lotus owners, I do believe the 400 and 410 are appealing to the Pork GT brigade. The 400 and 410 is a real contender and a real alternative to the Pork 911 and the GT cars especially when, as mentioned above, you look at the price differential of over £65k between a 410 and a 911 GT3. That's a serious wedge to save and to be invested in mods. And maybe that is or was Lotus's strategy, to slowly move the Evora closer to the 911, whilst bringing the Exige up close to the Cayman GT. There are granted many out there who, it seems, have no issue lashing out £140 - £200k on a track car or toy and to get them out of their Porker GT's or Macca's or Fezza's will not be an easy task for Lotus as those car companies do a good job of "looking after" these high net worth cash machines. However, there must be many more who will happily dosh out £50 - £120k on  a track toy and with the Elise Cup (£55k?), Exige 380 (£75k?), Evor 410 (£85k) and a potential Evora 430/450 that must come next year (£95k-£100k) Lotus has pretty well got that segment covered when you add in the 311 road (£90k and the 311 race £120k).

I find it hard to believe that next year we will not see an Evora 430/450 Sport from Lotus priced at around £95k - £100k.  They've done the lightening bit with the 410 and moved the price North. The next logical step is to take that lighter platform and add power and aero.  If it did happen, a factory Evora 430/450 Sport would be something....

I came into this world screaming and covered in someone elses blood. I'll probably leave it in the same way.
