I think the issue is that a fibreglass car with gel coat crazing can be done properly or can be done on the cheap (cracks simply filled in with a filler). It will only be 6 months after the repair that the owner (often the new owner) really sees what type of repair was done. It's for that reason I wouldn't be keen on a recently resprayed car unless I knew who did the repair and what was done..

Did a bit more research on the interwebs into the painting of fiberglass cars, while searching for pros and cons of stripping paint by dry sanding or using stripper.  Some fellow was after info on his vw camper fiberglass roof,  And a chap replied about not stripping with paint stripper no matter how safe.  He pointed out he had 20yrs experiance painting elans and his firm was the only company to offer a 12 month warranty on microb listers after paint.  They also bake the fiberglass bodys before painting and use a clear coat brushable product as a pre sealer after the oven to prevent water ingress into the fiberglass then sand down again and prep and top coat. :)

My wives nephew specialises in resprays of glass fibre cars and he quoted me a minimum of three months to do a respray a few months back. His reason being, heat between each coat, prep for next coat and heat again. He said the shell needs to breath and dry out. I have seen some of his work and it's simply stunning.

Quoted 3.5K for a full strip down, paint and rebuild which I thought was pretty good considering I knew the quality of his work.

That sounds very good John given it includes strip down even better now days as the cars seem to be rising in value, last year that would of been half the cost of a car to purchase or cars worth ! :)

It's a good point well made. Of course the cynic in me thinks that there is always an angle to get more money and, making the differential in price public would not have helped in hindsight, but if I have a keeper here then mike's reputation is on the line and I'm sure he knows what he is talking about.

The other body shop that quoted was familiar with glass fibre cars since they had just finished a Marcos. Of course the glass fibre work on low volume cars like the Marcos and scimitars is very different to the injection techniques used by lotus and they were talking about changing the gelcoat completely. Many low volume fibreglass cars craze like no one business and the lotus system is far more robust. I was hoping this explained the price difference since mike was quoting unseen and was expecting the usual age related disorders. On the otherhand once the other body shop got into it and discovered the extent of the problems then who's tsay where the price would have ended up.

The addage of buying the best you can afford really chimes here. What I thought I brought was an original car that hadn't been messed with and I did see some dogs before I brought mine... But if you by a forty year old lotus then original is an oxymoron I guess

There is no doubt Mike and his team know the task well enough to give good sound advice. They may make a few extra pounds on it but if they get it wrong can lose a fortune in reputation stakes. One bad job can take years to convince customers present and future that it was a one off so they have to be upfront and honest. In this case I would tend to agree with Mike about the shell knowing that the end product should be 100% perfect.
