Hans device

Recommended Posts

I wasn't sure what part of the forum to post this under.

For the track day enthusiast out there, does anyone use a Hans device in an Esprit WITHOUT the sport seats?

I do have a 5-point harness which is required for the Hans. It's difficult enough to get in and out of the car with just a helmet on.

Any info from anyone with experience in this system would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Geeeeee, I can imagine how difficult to use Hans device in any Lotus cars.

Beside your 5 points + Hans device, you are talking like James Bond THUNDERBALL flying JET PACK.

I'm sure it will work if the car is for GT1 configuration.

I have not seen anyone who use it for Sunday or occasional road racing.

Yep.... I would agree that this is totally over the top for track work or street racing with a road car.

How did you install your harness? I'm trying to install ham not sure how to do the shoulder straps. I am not convinced on using eye bolts through the firewall. I want the install of the belts to look clean.

My 5-points were installed by the previous owner with the help of a friend. The mounting points were installed through the leather trim and through the firewall just above the shoulder part of the seat. The bolt goes through the metal trim piece in the engine bay. Seems to work good. When tightened properly they apply enough pressure downward on your shoulders.

Mike back to your comment on a Hans device being over the top..... oh forget it. I'll keep my mouth shut. I think this has been debated before.

Thanks for the replies.

Hi Eric,

If you are currently in the habit of putting your helmet on before you get in the car, and you already have 5-point harnesses with correctly located shoulder belts, I don't see why you couldn't use a HANS. It's going to be awkward getting in, but then again it is already. Do keep in mind you will need new shoulder belts, as HANS uses a narrower belt.

That's good to know. I was under the impression the shoulder harness just went over the Hans. The last place I called will install the helmet clips free a charge. You can get quick release straps for a few extra bucks.I also found they make different angles for the Hans. 10 is for a straight back seat and a 20 works on most sports cars. Maybe if it doesn't work they will let me send it back.

Thanks

I have 5-point harnesses through Corbeau racing seats. You think the regular Esprit seats are tough?

I use a HANS device - with the number of deaths in the past 18 months at various drivers schools, I think that was enough evidence that it was worth the money.

Here is what I do - slide the seat all the way back, put the HANS on my shoulders, get in and close the door (try closing it when you are all buttoned up). Drape the shoulder belts over the HANS and pull the seat into position. Clip into the lap and anti-sub belts then put on my helmet. Clip the sholder belts and then clip the HANS straps to the helmet. Takes longer to type this than to actually do it. Really quite quick to get out of even with gloved hands, so I see absolutely no downside.

Paul,

Thanks for the info. That's the info I was looking for! I figure I spend so much on the car why not spend a little for my safety. I think we will start seeing more track day/DE drivers wear them. Do you use a 10 or a 20 with the Corbeaus. Do you think a 20 will work with the stock Esprit seats?

20 is perfect. You won't be sorry and I suspect it wont be long before it is required of the very advanced and instructor-level drivers.

Stay well,

Paul
