Exhaust Temp and Lambda Sensors

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a lambda sensor connected to their V8? If so, which bank of the motor did you decide to install it on? I'm wondering which bank of the motor runs hotter? I plan on purchasing a lambda sensor to help me tune my fuel curve. Any help would be appreciated.

Nathan,

You plan to install an additional wide band O2-sensor, right ?

Theorethically both sides are running equal.

If you like, you may even install two wide band sensors into the exact locations where the stock post cat sensors used to be.

IMHO this is the most elegant way to do it :D

JFYI, the post cat O2-sensors are NOT used (unless you still have a stock US-ECU installed). Both sensors just have to be still connected to the wiring loom, because the ECU just looks if they are there only once when you start the engine/ignition.

Cheers

Marcus,

What do you recommend for a dual Wideband reader/logger? I was thinking about the Innovative brand product line. Possibly the LM-1. However, everything I have seen is only capable of reading 1 wideband unit.

I have the PLX Devices R-300 installed in my Porsche 911 and it is a great unit. It logs data to internal memory, no PC required except to download the data. It also allows for user inputs, for example I log RPM and MPH with the AFR. Great for tuning. The only downside to this unit is its visibility while driving. Since my Porsche is a track car, I am not looking at the meter, just looking at the data after a day at the track. Hence the data is more important to me than the meter's look.

Are you going to tune each bank independently? If yes, two sensors are ideal. If not, one sensor will be accurate enough. To reinforce Marcus' statement, unless there is a mechanical issue in the injection system/valve train/compression/blow-by, the two banks should hypothetically be operating the same.

Thanks! I actually have an Apexi' S-AFC a/f controller instaled, but it only gives me ratios based upon the Air ratios I programmed into it. It doesn't pull it directly from the o2.

I am also looking for a device that will record EGTs. Q: What is the max the EGT should be for an Esprit v8 without causing any problems? I'm trying ot run as lean as I possibly can.Right now, I'm running pretty rich at 10:1. I was thinking about a 14:1 ratio, but I'm not sure how much that will raise my EGTs (especially since I don't have a mechanism for monitoring it).

PLX Devices (please note I do not work for them!), makes a unit, the R500, that also measures EGT. This device also has output signals which could feed your Apexi. Calibration of the PLX signal output so the Apexi can interpret the data is critical to success with this set-up. Not difficult, just be careful because you do not want to burn-up your engine with a lean mixture....

EGT is usually at maximum with the ideal 14.7 to 1 AFR. Richer OR leaner will cause EGT to go down so you need to be sure you know what side of the curve you are on. The wideband will give you the correct info.

There is much debate on optimal AFR to maximize HP, my opinion is 13 to 1 for non-turbo engines, and about 12 to 1 for turbo engines. Tweaking from these starting points will get you to a good endpoint.

Nathan--->

I bought an LM-1 Innovate. You can only monitor one side of the exhaust.

Most American V8 has a balancing pipe in the exhaust, Innovate will work in one monitor.

However if its a Lotus V8 and the exhaust is split,(according to Innovate) monitor one side first then the next side. They said, it will be close.

I've been told, they are 6 mos. away from producing 2 monitors in one system.

Wow! 14.1 in the turbo engine?

Good for state emission---lean is mean!

I say 12.5 (that's power).

Your current 10.1 is way too rich!

Yeah dude! 10:1 is rich, I would like to run 14:1, but I don't want to burn out my pistons. Yes, they are forged. :( Imagine trying to do this with the stock cast piston

So, how have you been man?!?! Long time no hear from. How's that hyabusa 7? LOL...

Craig,

Do you need a software package on your PC for datalogging? I am planning on getting a wideband to tune my SE but am having difficulty getting a straight story from Innovative on the requirements I'll need, seems every distributor is telling me a different story, one tells me I don't need anything more than the LM1 kit, then another tells me I need the RPM convertor then another tells me I need the Kit and the RPM convertor!

The PLX units come with data logging software and USB drivers. Free updates are available at plxdevices.com

The units also include the wideband O2 (Bosch) and harness. No other purchases are required (well maybe some wire and crimping tools). To log RPM, MPH etc., you tap into the exisitng car signal wire feeding the stock gauge. The trick is finding the specs on the pulse signal feeding the stock gauges. Once this is determined, the PLX unit is easily programmed to accept and interpret this signal for you in real time. I found the specs for my 911 on the internet, I would guess someone has them for your car.

fact 900c max Exhaust temp...the temperaturecan be monitored by fitting a probe in the left hand exhaust manifold...by removing the small plate..two small 8 or 10mm bolts.. this can be scene when one looks behind the rear of the left hand side of the engine.

sorry can't add more..at this time.

One day this year....I will be doing this on my own car..When its finished......twin inter coolers..hks ssbov...hybrid turbo's...apexi avc-r boost controller..JE forged Piston's ARP studs..Johan ECM...etc etc..should be 6 speed dog box as well..circa 200mph possible then..we will see.

Dude, are you saying 900 Degrees Centigrade or kelvin??? :D The melting point for aluminum is 660.37 degrees centigrade.

Now for iron it's 1535.0c, but the v8 block is not iron. Can you please add some clarity to this for me? Please correct me if I mis-interpreted your posting.

Draw your own conclusion:

but I'd say 900'C. The block has the luxury of the coolant jackets. But the exhaust doesn't which is why it would be inadvisable to make own out of aluminium to save weight!

May: DON'T hit it with a hammer!

Clarkson: Why?

May: Cause it's the tool of a pikey.

Hi Neil I think we have met..your car did 179 mph at Bruntingthorpe with Rob E doing around 176..

temperature max is 900C yes..engine not safe above that..I believe the GT1 race cars ran a max of just over 1000C.

My pal has a probe in his manifold connected to a hand held gauge...cheers Rob
