84 Turbo - ABS?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

a question for the experts - my 84 turbo has this device plumbed into the braking system that looks suspiciously like an ABS pump. You'll note in the pics the cars brake lines run from the master cylinder into the block, and then lines run out from it to the calipers.

can anyone tell me what this is? Could it possibly be factory fitment?

It doesn't seem to have a specific pipe to each caliper, and no electrical connections for wheel speed sensors (which I'm guessing you don't have either). Possibly just a booster/electrical brake servo and not a full ABS system.

I have made many mistakes in my life. Buying a multiple Lotus is not one of them.

There isn't anything on the parts list that looks remotely like this. So third party/aftermarket fitment perhaps? Has it got a part number or other identifiers? If so, I can have a dig for you.

Sparky says anything yellow is important, so that wire that goes to the reservoir cap level sensor must be important. I reckon the previous owner had bad knees, and had so much trouble while bleeding the brakes that he fitted an electric pump to save all that pushing up and down on the brake pedal.

Margate Exotics.

Looking around I agree with Filip, I think that this is an aftermarket electric brake booster. There's some pretty heavy duty wires involved. Presumably the pressure switch (looks like an oil pressure switch) triggers activation of the motor.
