What do you dislike about the Evora design

Apologies for a negative title, but following on from posts in JayEmms test drive blockbuster it's apparent to me that many of us view the Evora (in whichever guise) as a very special car with only very minor things we'd really like to change. For me there are two things I dislike, one is the very minor issue that the handbrake doesn't fold down flat or level, and the other is that the doors need to open quite wide to get in or out - this can be an issue on ferries or in some car parks.

Other things I worried about prior to purchase are really no problem when you know the car, although Lotus have improved some of these things on the 400.

My biggest irk is the one that affects every model, the rear visibility. I find it especially annoying when driving at night and it sometimes feels like cars miraculously appear behind me out of nowhere. Reversing doesn't need much discussion, it's pish, as you can't even see properly out the side.

On the flip side of that, the crappy rear view often sees me behaving better than I would at times in regard to my speed, as I have no idea if the police are right behind me on the motorway, so better safe than sorry!

So every cloud and all that....

:D

I was worried about rear visibility, but don't find it too bad tbh. If you haven't already tried it you might want to try angling your rear view mirror a bit more - it is usrprising how that can change the view out of the rear. I find a lot of cars these days have thick pillars and especially the C pillars so rear visibility is poor. Perhaps I'm more forgiving of this because I was worried about it and then found it wasn't as bad as I feared.

I find quite a few cars have poor rear 3/4 visibility - especially ones starting as convertibles. Eg Z4 coupe,  F type, Audi TT etc

I love the view out the back of the 400. Seeing the super charger bit moving, so cool

If the rear visibility is no worse than the TT, then it's not that bad.  Looking at pics, I would imagine the visibility on the Evora to be much worse.  Apart from the much discussed key ignition and start button, the trunk is a disappointment as it does not fit a golf cart bag.  Interestingly, the Honda engineers thought of making a cart bag sized trunk in the NSX.  About the only sports car that can fit this kind of bag in its trunk

I thought there was a problem with water puddling in the door strake that then consequently fell on the person opening the door? I thought that would have come up.

I like the design of the Evora. Not overstated.

All we know is that when they stop making this, we will be properly, properly sad.Jeremy Clarkson on the Esprit.

Opinions are like armpits. Everyone has them, some just stink more than others.

I've not had any water fall on me from the doors so not sure if that's a feature with all Evoras. I don't play golf so that's not an issue for me either, but a larger boot would have been useful and I think it could have been achieved if the rear exhaust silencer was not such a huge chunk.

In pictures I thought the design of the S1 Evora looked a little "Soft", but actually seeing it in the flesh there's plenty of edges and angles to keep it interesting. Some cars just don't photograph well.

Poor rear visibility has never bothered me too much, as I spend a fair bit of time driving a van with zero rear visibility. At least the Evora has a reversing camera, which makes parking much easier.

More space in the back seats would be great. Currently our Evora really only has a place in the family until my children get too big - so probably only another 5 years.?

Perhaps ditch the V6 and replace it with a turbo charged 4 cylinder to make it possible. It has proven to be incredibly well received for some other makes...!?

This is super gay but no cup holder. Don't often need one but its one of those things you don't realise you use until you don't have one!

Slightly wider rear seats (like the 400) as I can't fit my daughters car seat and have the rear seats in as it places her too far over to the centre of the car.

Doors like AM that scissor slightly making it easier to get out of tight spaces.

That's it! The list of thing I bloody love is massive! The things I mention above are insignificant in reality.

I haven't been able to compare the doors open width of a McLaren with the doors open width of an Evora, but I get the impression McLaren did their fancy door opening to get around the problem the Evora has with needing a big door to open wide.

Have to agree with Stuno1 though, the list of truly outstanding positives makes all of these gripes quite insignificant overall.

Leaking trunk and small glove box are the first two that come to mind that haven't been mentioned.

I don't have the leaking trunk, but do have the small glovebox. It is big enough for a pair of gloves - ladies, driving or golfers, so technically big enough to fit the description.

This irritated me briefly because it looked like Lotus could have easily done better with the design of this glovebox, but when I drive the car I'm happy they spent the design effort on the driving feel and not a space I'd just fill with stuff I mostly don't need to drive around with anyway.

I sat in a McLaren the other week, didn't like the doors at all. I found they really got in the way and funnily enough I found it very hard to get in easily. Very high sills, not unlike the Elise/Exige. I'm sure with practise you get better at it.

On some BMWs you can set the car so when you open the door, the window winds down. Makes life much easier for getting in/out of tight spaces. Only works with frameless windows though.

It took the dealer three attempts to make it as watertight as it can be.  This is a known issue on the Evora.  Mostly due to rivets no being sealed around the trunk.  Most owners are not leaving their car outside 24-7 which is what my car was for the 1.5 years of my ownership.  Also when the rear lid lifts up if it has water on it, falls right into engine side of the carpeted area.  Now that I have a garage, the trunk has been dry, but local dealer said "they just leak and that's that..." after the 3rd and final attempt to fix.

If the car is not from the UK or Italy; it's not worth talking about.

Well hopefully the 400 isn't too leaky. I do have a garage but I don't keep any cars in it because I like to use them and it's a pain to get into the garage (you have to clear the whole driveway of cars basically).

Rear vision irk aside, I don't think there's a car on sale I'd currently rather have than my 400. It's by far and away my favourite of the many, many cars I've owned.

I don't think there's a new car on sale for that money that does anything for me. Even the McLaren, being a far superior performer (and more exotic looking) doesn't sound as nice in my opinion and at those performance levels, and for the driving I do, I'd take the nicer noise over the 200hp difference

My gripe is lack of storage around the cockpit( yes including cup holder) and the fact that the drivers seat wears where you get in and out.  TPMS that works properly would be a bonus too ......

I am totally digging all the McLaren's, but it's a manual or nothing for my one.  I would've kept my XK if it were a manual.  The 400 is just awesome.  The more I reflect on my test drive, the more I want one.  I had planned a minimum tenure of ownership before considering another car.  I have about a year before I am there.  Does not mean I can't day dream on it...

Rear view (or lack thereof...) has already been mentioned, you just have to be aware that there could be a bus lurking beside you. As mentioned in another thread the wheels are prone to curbing, especially the 19/20" Design wheels. Low profile in combination with poor visibility can be an issue. Regarding the design the only part I still have mixed feelings about is the front. Some days I feel it's a bit too smooth. Although adding TBDs splitter helps.

None of the things mentioned up until now bother me to be honest.  I've learnt to live with the car.

My foible is the exhaust.  It doesn't stay clean, and by which I mean it gets overly sooty.  That's it.  The only thing I would really change.  My severe potty training, my problem I guess.

Changing the rest would make the Evora a different car, and one that I probably wouldn't have bought...
