Hi Alec,

If your drive popped out, and you just simply put it back in anywhere your timing will be out, the distributor is set of the dog drive, so if you simply just cant pop it back in any old place. You will need to remove the distributor, set the engine in the correct place normally tdc number one cylinder and put the distributor back in so the rotor arm points to the HT spart lead for cylinder number 1.

Its hard to explain without pictures, do not worry though you have not damaged anything, it can easily be sorted.  Hopefully someone will post some pics to explain it better.

PM me your phone number and I'll see if I can get a window to pop down on the motorbike. It would have to be at a weekend though. I only accept payment in coffee - milk with one and a half sugars please :P

OK I qualify for the numpty club I have reinstalled the dizzy correctly fired it up and it still ran like a dog further investigation showed that number 2 lead was on 3 and 3 on 2 .I have reveresed this cock up and it runs ok just got to set up timing and colourtune the carbs .I have been working on classic cars for 20 odd years and that is the first time I have cocked up like that .Many thanks to Dunc who was prepared to come and help for the price of a coffee .Top man.One more question I have electronic ignition in original dizzy what is the best timing set up please

Thanks Alec

I've been working on classic cars for a similar number of years and I regularly make cock ups like that - so don't be too hard on yourself!

Glad you got it sorted.

What kind of electronic ignition? One thats static and lets the dizzy do the advance/retard, or one that has an advance curve built in?

Hi Dunc its an Accu spark stealth ignition points conversion kit if that helps at all there is no vacuum advance attached to the dizzy
