Binnacle warning lamps

Recommended Posts

Anyone got a photo or diagram of the warning lamps for the RHS top right in the binnacle?

I've just been looking around, and two of the bulbs with holders are hanging loose out of their sockets, and I've no idea which one goes where. Plus there are five sockets, and only four bulb holders with no sign of a fifth.

I've put them in where I think they might go, photo attached, but confirmation would be great!

You need to know what colours the wires are on each lamp.

then you can cross ref them.  Or just do what the previous owner/ garage did with my cel and tuck it out of the way with some black tape wrapped round it

I tried to make sense of the wiring diagrams, but there weren't enough details. This is the best I could do...

assuming the revised harness S4 is the same as the S4s...

From the steering wheel side of the dash (left to right):

1) Early cars: Fan fail tell tale (colour unknown)

Later cars: Catalyst overheat tell tale (colour unknown)

2) Airbag light (Possibly Green, Orange/Pink (or just blue?), Orange/Slate (or just blue))

3) (on USA type) Brakes/parking brake tell tale (The missing one on your car)

4) (Euro type) Brakes/parking brake tell tale (possibly Green and Black/White)

5) Engine Coolant tell tale (possibly Green and Slate/Black)

I'm assuming slate is grey?

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be too many of my colours matching your photograph. Maybe it might help you locate one or two lamps?

I discovered that only four of the five holes are in use, the middle one is blanked. The one on the inside left is the *coolant alarm, the next one is for the airbags. As my car doesn't have airbags (only windbags), the important one is the coolant.

The revised wiring diagram shows slate and green wires going to the lamp. Mine has slate/pink and green/light green. Guess that's the closest one, eh? Just to be sure, I'll short out the coolant level switch.

All the rest of the stuff works, and the gauges are back in. The real fun starts later...............

EDIT - The colour is correct, the far left is the engine coolant high temp, and the one on the far left is the coolant header tank level. All sorted, and now it's binnacle time.:wallbash:

I was hoping someone might know without me having to pore over them for ages.

Unless you fancy doing it for me?

Actually I was asking because my binnacle is out for the interior refurb so I'll have the same checks to make on mine before it goes back in.

Its currently in my garage loft and I'm in the workshop recoating all my leather, otherwise I would have dragged it out and checked it for you. Assuming the wiring in an S4S is the same as my 1990 of course...

Not worth starting anything now...🍺

While we're on the subject, which tell-tale lights are supposed to light up upon ignition? I've never seen my FAN FAIL lamp for instance... I suspect my bulbs may be blown...

Is now a good time to ask how difficult it is to remove the binnacle of the facelift v8 dash to check the lamps ??

Can we keep Jeremy and politics out of this thread please and focus on binnacle lights?

Oh, God forbid I make a mistake. It's what happens when you're trying to do a difficult job, asking for information, and still trying to post stuff to be helpful to other people. It's fun, you should try it some time.

I just thought you'd wandered off topic Ian and was talking about how the Labour Party was two far left under Jeremy! Silly old me as I was going to agree with you

Understood. Just wondering if you got a summary or updated photo for the next guy with this problem?

I found the diagrams for another type of car next to useless and just spent a solid 6 weeks trying to redraw, colour and add useful information to them, so I understand how hard it is to do this kind of stuff.

Cheers

My warning lamps were pulled out accidentally, and unbeknown to me, when I was wrestling with the binnacle from hell. There are several different wiring diagrams in the service notes depending on the model, the S4s is the 'revised wiring' one.

But surely you took photos before you pulled it all to pieces?

I haven't disassembled my binnacle, only removed it from the car.

My concern is that (a) I might find the same problem of wiring adrift and/or (b) I'll want to check that everything is connected in the right place in case a PO has been meddling before.

I guess I'll find out when I get it out of the garage loft in the next few weeks...

Not worth starting anything now...🍺

I checked yesterday, the FAN FAIL should come on with the bulb check when turning on the ignition. Easiest way to verify would be to take out one of the fuses for the fans and bridge the fan control relay (at the rear). If it doesn't light up, you'll need to check the bulb and wiring, starting from the dash...

I have made many mistakes in my life. Buying a multiple Lotus is not one of them.
