Engine oil and use of

Recommended Posts

So my car did 400 miles last year after an engine out mechanical resto with Gerald in Newmarket.

I checked my levels today and it is under the lower level. Quick questions.

1. Do they normally use that much for 400 miles? The engine is tight and there is no oil dropped under it at any time.

2. I have some 20W50 but it's out of date (by a few years). Is it still ok?

3. Halfords is closed. Any garages anyone knows who sells it (not just Norwich area but in general like Shell stations do etc)as i am leaving tomorrow for the Lotus Brooklands day and may not have enough time in the morning.

If you want 5l of 20w/50 or 10w/60 then feel free to pop round. Just take it and replace it after you return. I have Mobil and Valvoline if I recall correctly.

Wilco should have something even if it's "classic" or something.

Oil has a shelf life of about 7 years before it is totally useless for your engine. If your engine is tight like you say, I think using 20/50 should work fine. But I would change it at least once a year no matter how little  you drive.

I also would use a synthetic oil ( same viscosity )  as they are superior to any petroleum based oils in every way. In fact, there wouldn't even be jet engines if it wasn't for synthetic oils as petroleum oils just can't keep up and do the job.

It is all I use including transmissions and rear ends as well. Better power, gas mileage, lower emissions and longer life in all cases.

Your engine was costly to rebuild and synthetic oil is cheap insurance.

When Gerald redid the top end of my esprit engine he put semi-synthetic in it, and said it should run on it for 10,000 miles, otherwise all the bits that mesh together won't seat correctly with fully synthetic - and it will become a "slow engine".

This is what he put in at the time - and is still what I'm using for another 2000 miles.

I've been told that as well to a degree. Run an new engine in on mineral oil and change to synthetic oil after run in. Never knew that engine oil had a Use-By-Date though.

All we know is that when they stop making this, we will be properly, properly sad.Jeremy Clarkson on the Esprit.

Opinions are like armpits. Everyone has them, some just stink more than others.

0W40 fully synthetic?? :o  Even mobil1 field managers didnt advise to take this... And they have to live from their products.

My post is related to the last sentence with Mobil1.

On my devices it Is not possible to alter the quotes to the parts which should be quoted exactly. It is only on or off. This is also responsible for many pictures been quoted which doesn't. make sense. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Just been to check and I tell a lie - its' still on Castrol Edge 10-60. Gerald said that he'd switched to supplying Mobil 1 in future.

I guess it would be this one, not the 0-40
