The Evora 400 Diaries

I'm fast getting addicted to these videos. Thanks and keep them coming.

As for possible future videos, I have some thoughts but these may be tricky to do. My ideas are based on Joe publics reactions and perceptions, such as the old trick of covering the badges and seeing what people think it is. Alternatively hidden camera filming of people's reactions as you drive by - we find some people look all cool and pay little attention on first sight and then turn around to look once you've gone by and this really amuses my children. Much more than the people who just look with no attempt to hide their enthusiasm. Just recently I think I saw a similar comment from another owner, and whilst I'm sure this is not unique to Lotus we may get this more than some cars as the Evora is so rare.

Whilst I may not be able to do the Aldi test with the 400, I do want to get some people's perceptions and thoughts of the car on camera at a car show soon. The vast majority of people love the car - I'd say some days more than half the people I drive past look at it. What's interesting is the petrolheads who don't know about it, or thought the Evora was still the same thing they saw on top gear seven years ago.

Glad you're enjoying them. I've got about four queued up at the minute, but am moderating my uploads to spread them out. It will be a great summer. Please spread the word :)

You are a man of talent, James! Good that it serves a good cause, too. :)

Your videos are indeed getting better and your last one (Five things you love about the Evora 400) comes across as a true enthusiast showing due respect to an amazing yet functional piece of art/engineering.

The pure driving one needs to be appreciated in the right mood (=volume), but at some point the noise reminded me of "C'était un rendezvous". Maybe there is some marketing potential for Lotus there, No need to rush through Paris at night, though, Maybe some inspiring empty roads in Norfolk with the right light at the right time of the day and THAT NOISE could inspire us all.

I am all in for different styles and approaches in future videos. You are into something, I think.

As for other ideas, I think it makes most sense to put an Elise S1 and an Evora 400 together and guide people through the sheer talent put into them and the (engineering) beauty of both. I also agree that you should explore other car makers (even German ones) too. Someone said the other day that Lotus is the new Porsche (=sports car for the actual enthusiast). Let's make sure every one knows that.

Some of us have commented extensively on here that similar videos on the original Evora helped us in taking the plunge. I think you are doing a great job in spreading the word to those who are still in the search of something special.

Keep them coming.

Cheers,

Jorge

PS. Just find a different shirt, please. Or is that one going to be your defining attribute in the Youtube era and something you want to be proud of in twenty years time? :harhar:

"C'était un rendezvous".

Surely the greatest non-motorsport car film of all time?

James, I whole heartedly agree with these positive comments and, for me, the last is the pick of the bunch.

Yep, I even learnt something... Asymmetrical vents in rear haunches.

i guess the same is in S1 Evora, but less noticeable because the grills are external not internal.

Thanks for all the comments lads. Normal shirt service will be resumed shortly, I need to get some more wacky shirts. As it happens the radio mic does not get on well with T-shirts!

The original video now has more than 1,500 views on it, which I am really chuffed with. When I was looking at buying the 400, the information on the car was so thin on the ground - there were plenty of reviews, but a review only ever tells you so much. If there's at least one person out there who decides to test drive a 400 based on these videos, my work here is done :)

Here is the next installment in the series. I filmed this one whilst waiting for @Stuno1 to turn up to our appointment the other day. (I was early, he was on time!)

A few guys had requested walk-arounds of the car, probably not of much interest to you guys on here but I'll post the link for posterity anyway. We managed to get three videos out of this day, this one, a 400 vs SR comparison (coming next) and an owner profile/interview with Stu

Hello James,

Just seen this thread today and watched your videos and really enjoyed them.

I love to share others' excitement when collecting a new car, especially one as special as the 400!

I think it looks epic in yellow too; good choice. I have looked at the white one at SMC a couple of times, but decided this week to buy a used V6 Cup Exige in Solar Yellow.

I still fancy a stripped out and raw car for a while, but the 400 is on the radar for later perhaps.

I look forward to further updates and thoughts on your ownership experience.

Cheers

Simon

A quick bit of maths shows me on a recent fill up I averaged 27mpg - extremely impressive I think. I've known many turbo cars fall way short of their promised figures. The gauge is very misleading though, I keep filling up thinking it's gone dry but it's still got 15 litres in it. Still, better that than over read! This was a tank where I did a mix of driving - back roads, fast and slow plus some dual carriageway cruising.

As a point of comparison Audi's figure for the V8 R8 is 21mpg - and that's the official figure. Not of great concern to many people but over time that will make a difference.

No idea how you managed that James, I am doing well to get 22MPG out of my Exige (according to the ap I have)! Have to fill up every 170 miles.

Have you checked this app you have isn't using smaller US gallons?

The other options are: you've left the hand-brake on; you've not found the higher gears yet; you're doing just stop-start motoring in traffic or you're really really enjoying your car...

The only slight issue being that even where I'm (for example) mooching back from a track day, I still can't seem to get it higher. Still, only 3,500 miles in with it, just had it's first service (no issues) so maybe it will improve as time passes (or I stop enjoying the car like I stole it!)

I do believe it was acknowledged that the new setup with the 400 yielded considerably better fuel economy than the older V6. I would expect an Exige to do better than an older Evora though if for no other reason than its lighter.

My OBC has given me figures all the way from about 22-29 so far. Fuel economy isn't something that bothers me much, as its a second car, but for someone looking to use one on a daily basis I can see it being handy. Also, when the models get older and are entering the market second hand at a lower price point these things will become even more important.

I've seen you drive Will. It's definitely the last point. ?

Plus, the easiest way you could improve mpg is to stop trying to pull away from 400s on a local country blat!

I don't judge the 400's mpg, ever. It's the spg that really counts.

Just got home from holiday and caught up with your videos. I am really enjoying them, they are interesting and I like your delivery.

However, I cannot help but feel like I am doing something naughty. I've never done either, but imagine it's a similar feeling to cheating on your wife, or  watching porn when your wife is in the in the next room.

Just watched @Stuno1 video.

very well done, well spoken, flowing. Really well done.

My only criticism (constructive), when Stuart was talking about steering feedback, maybe a panning shot of steering wheel, when he mentioned playing golf, a panning shot of boot space etc.

might have been nice to have had Stuart sat on the front wing of the car, or on a chair next to it, as the scenery behind him was a little bland/unrelated.

overall, enjoyed the owner profile segment.
