and now for something completely different

I was out running my car this morning, grinning like an idiot as usual, when it died. The distributor came out? :o I thought, well maybe the clamp came loose. I re-stabbed the distributor and fired the car back up. Runs fine, but I have a tapping noise from the oil pump/dissy area. The oil pump is new with less than 2k miles on it. The only thing I can think of is there must be play in the aux drive shaft. Anyone have any ideas? :)

Clay , are you sure your distributor cap is back on properly?

If you dont get the locating pin lined up properly, before you pull the clips on, the rotor arm will hit one or more of the posts , making a clicking noise as it does so whilst the engine is running.

I seem to remember forum members Jussi's distributor fell out when a mechanic changed his oil filter by removing the distributor and didnt tighten the clamp up enough when he reinstalled it!

Only other thing I could think of was the distributor isnt pushed fully home into the auxillery housing (so the distributor drive slot isnt fully engaged into the oil pump) causing the distributor drive to float up and down ( making a noise)

Clay,

You could eliminate the dist. altogether w/ an Electromotive, or similar crank triggered unit. I have one in my '85 Turbo. It also eliminates the possibility of fire caused by leaking carbs :) , so for me it is cheap insurance. Plus you customize all ignition parameters, and there's nothing to 'fall out'. :D

Cheers, Lee

Yep that happened to us, our "Lotus-specialist" (not Jussi2) didn't tighten it properly. So it fell out, luckily I was just trying to start the car and it didn't happened on full speed :D

You have to be very careful to put it back to place cause when you think it's in place it necessarily isn't, just check it twice and after that check it again :)

Look up their website to aquaint yourself on all the options. They should have distributors(no not those distributors! :D ) listed. If you have no luck, let me know. Where are you located? A friend in Canada installed one on his S2. He was also responsible for getting the design and machining of the sensor holder bracket done, and an absolutely beautiful alloy box to put the main unit in. I will try to post a pic of the alloy box later. you can see pics of the sensor bracket on my garage space.

Hi, I had my distributor jump out due to a mechanic not putting the clamp on properly after checking the ign. timing. So called professional????????? Any how it has to fit in a certain groove to stay on properly. You often need to take dizzy out and fit clamp to aux housing first. Always go for the simplist and stupidest thing first mate and never trust a garage!!! God i sound cynical lol
