steering column moving sideways

Recommended Posts

I have noticed that when I take firm grip from the steering wheel and move it sideways, there is some amount of the movement in the steering column. It also makes clunking sound time to time when driving.

What I have to remove and how to get the steering column visible?

I have removed 4 screws from the plastics in the front of the steering wheel, but the parts do not come apart.

Do I have to remove steering wheel and the instrument pinnacle to proceed?

To remove the steering column shrouds you should only need to do the following:

- Unplug the block connector for the instrument illumination rheostat
- Remove the upper shroud by removing the screw at each side that secures it to the lower shroud
- Remove the lower shroud by removing the two screws that fix it to the upper column bracket

I cannot recall there being any kind of additional clips when I did mine but maybe the V8 is slightly different.

Than You for the reply,

My car is 1998 V8 and it seems that there is something different in the setup.

Maybe I pull the steering wheel off to check the situation. I just hope that I had the better replacement to the hideous looking original...
