This months Classic Cars magazine has an article comparing Turbo cars from the 1980s. The photo shoot was last November and the Essex gets a good write up, particularly against the 911 Turbo.

Stephen, thanks and yes the journalist who wrote it has written books on the Esprit so he's more clued up than most journos. Brooke, not sure mate but on the basis that it says the Esprit is bett

Great article Barrie and your car looks stunning as always. Article appears very accurate with the content provided........other than the price guide which seems well out!

Not sure I can justify it :)

Thanks for the link Nerobi!

Yeah the conclusion felt half-assed, but the journo did come across like he has credible experience, and comparing that group of turbo charged cars is like comparing any random 10 people because they each have a nose. No denying the integrale is a great bit of kit though and a Giugiaro stable mate. It does a lot with 1995cc.

I have to say, the more I hear and read the more I get the impression that the pre turbo Esprits just don't seem to be taken seriously outside people who own them. (I'm not having a go, just chatting)

The Escort (971kg! I knew they were biscuit tins but that's a surprise), and the R5 are out of place amongst the others too but it's an interesting read. I suppose it's more of a group test rather than a group comparison.

If you could go a bit further I'd recommend the Continental Flying Spur. It's an astonishing car. It does everything, beautifully, and things you would never have guessed. I was getting 20mpg under a heavy foot over the short time i had one. It'll balance on the throttle in a roundabout so easily it's almost like your butler is doing it for you, I've heard ;) €320k+ new and you can get them for sub €30k today. Yes buy a flying spur.... and a Dr. Dre album
