V8 clutch alignment

Here's a tongue in cheek question.

whats the best way to align the clutch plates on a v8 so the gearbox can be refitted.

i only ask as it would seem after buying a new clutch - alignment is now an issue. I'm not doing this myself!!!!

Very easy job...... you just need a matching tool for the input shaft to align the splines of the twin drive plates before they are clamped to the flywheel.  This tool is inserted with the clutch pack loosely coupled and engages in the pilot bearing on the nose of the crank.

If there is an issue, you would need to check that the supplied plates are consistent with the Renault UN1 shaft - assuming that it is a standard UN1-27.

I only mention as some of the gearbox upgrades are supplied with a Ford 1" spline and would clearly need the corresponding drive plates to match.

Mike - thanks for that - is it a specialised tool ?? I'm perplexed as to why I'm being told it's an issue!!!

Im just a simple sparky - but I'm struggling to understand the garage at the minute...... If they needed a bloody tool why didn't they tell me weeks ago when they asked me to buy a clutch!!

If the gearbox is standard then an alignment tool for any Renault 21/25 - these should be pretty common.

I could well have been that there's enough tools at that garage already.

I phoned the garage at 9 this morning - gearbox not on clutch not aligned.

told them not to bother doing anything - I'm on my way down with a mate and we would sort it.

arrived at 10 prompt - to find clutch aligned and gearbox fully bolted on - and one "mechanic" who looked somewhat sheepish.

it was very clear - next to nothing had been done to that car yesterday - and any issue was just smoke, mirrors and essence of bull.
