Just for reference, and I will mirror this in my other thread, but after my "how loud" video and the comments I got, I got back in my car to check I wasn't being a numpty. In tour mode, with the exhaust in "default", and revving as slowly as possible my valve opens at 4,500rpm. Not 5,500.

I will double check with the calibration engineer I spoke to, but seeing as this is his job, I can't see how he was incorrect.

Interesting, if we could get the valve to stay closed until 5.5k then it would pass the static test and only risk the drive by, which is easier to avoid.

The normal Static is 3/4 max revs, which if max revs is 7200rpm, 3/4 is 5,400.

However, if ECU opens it at 4,500, then there is no chance of sneaking under the static tests.

I do believe @CocoPops and I could be wrong, but I think the rev limit of the 400 is actually 7,000. If you were having a hard time you could always tell them it was 6,600rpm - which in tour mode it is.

I was testing at 5,200 - but my valve was clearly opening before that. For what it's worth I did some very slow third gear acceleration on the road earlier and same thing - opened at 5,500rpm.

I wouldn't be entirely surprised if someone got it wrong, my car's head unit was replaced today by their in-house "specialist" and the settings are all over the shop. They haven't even followed their own setup guide!

I stand corrected on the valve and it was my mistake, it's meant to open at 4.5k no matter what, but will open earlier if over 50% throttle was applied. Sorry!

The 3-Eleven exhaust is going to be track friendly however I'm not sure how transferrable the parts will be, or if it will morphed to suit the 400. That's the emails I'm awaiting replies about.

  • 2 weeks later...

I asked on the test drive if the exhaust was 'legal' for track use.

I was assured  it was.

It formed a key reason why I bought it.

Right now not chuffed. Considering options.

An unfortunate fascination with Lotus, and proper drivers cars.

All caused by S75 LCF back in 2002, a mustard yellow GT3, and someone on here's got her.....

Quite:P

However, not only was I assured the exhaust was absolutely a-ok for trackdays, but this is, in sentiment at the very least, backed up by the traction options.

If the dealer tells you the exhaust is a-ok to go on track, and the car, made in England, comes with a traction control setting designed solely for track use.....

You'd kinda expect it to be able to go straight to Donington. It seems not, or at least not unless you want to gamble with a day off work, the trackday cost and the fuel etc. Every time you go to a trackday.

I am seriously unimpressed.

I would be having a very serious word with your supplying dealer because there are very, very few places that will let you out. They should know this because even if they dont know numbers off the top of their head they should know its bloody loud and most track days don't take kindly to that! They probably just assumed road legal = track legal. I am currently working on a plan to get the car on a drive-by noise test at Snetterton, it may squeeze through that but on the static alone it will fail any track day which has a noise test. And very few don't.

I had the car out on track yesterday, more on that soon, but I certainly wouldn't rock up at just any old track day because like yourself I don't fancy paying out, going somewhere, then finding I cant get on, with no refund!

Reading the handbook, it states that in Sport or Race mode if you press the exhaust button it will close the valve and stay closed unless rpm exceeds 5500. Is the handbook lying?

On this basis you could probably pass a static test by selecting Sport or Race and closing the valve.

Yep, which is why it will blitz every static noise test.

4,500 just isn't high enough to convince noise testers that to 3/4 max revs.

if they could do a "vw style" emissions ecu setting that opened valve at 6k whilst car is static
