I've gone the Auto route and there is no such noise.   Have you considered exchanging for a second hand Auto ...they are very impressive.

Agree with that, no noise with the Auto Gearbox, and sure that the best solution is to exchange your car for a second hand auto. You'll never resolve the issue, sad but true :(

My Evora S was exactly like this and I also had numerous Lotus engineers state it was normal. I also wasn't happy at the time.  It sounded like a tractor going up hill , at low revs, with transmission under load.

However the test drive I did of an Evora 400 manual the sound had been dampened somewhat , but still present.

I've gone the Auto route and there is no such noise.   Have you considered exchanging for a second hand Auto ...they are very impressive.

@DJW Also you're Evora S do this? OMG! One year ago I was closed to bought it but I don't listen anything like that during test drive!what do you mean about auto route? Is it cruise control? Because also my car if i use with cruise control noise disappear.

@Taylor the video was after 15km or run (because the noise isn't present when car is cold), both Windows closed (if open you don't listen nothing), closed exhaust and on each gear at lov revs (2000/3000 rpm).

@Corsu @DJW what do you think about automatic gear? I read so bad review... in fact that's why I decided to bought car with the manual. I don't know how it perform.

Car created the noise when car was under load...e.g. Accelerating at low revs

re Auto, just been out in car today and love it. Changes gear so fast from pull of paddle and auto blips on downshifts when in sports mode. Go try one, they are great.    The IPS on the series one Evora is much slower from pull of paddle to gear change ( circa +1 second).

Fully understand your frustration of noise from manual gearbox. I was the same with my Evora S.  Think you are unlucky to have a noisier one than the demo car I drove, but I believe Lotus will do nothing to resolve it, so you either carry on being annoyed or make the move to Auto (if you want to keep a Lotus).

Re your aircon whistle, what position do you have the airflow on the dial. Mines on feet & screen, and no whistle from mine.   I'm out in the car again tomorrow morning, so can try same position as yours and report back.

@DJW the air con whistle with the air temperature starting from the 3/4 hot to full hot , with the air flow on all position feet excluded, with air speed from 3/4 to max. Not whistle just when positioned on feet. The inspector recognize the issue and don't offer me any action under guarantee ATM, but told me that's a common issue and a fix is under development (I don't think so).in the meanwhile, with my dealer We tried to partialize air quantity with some rudimental manner directly from the air filter tube and from the re-circle hole under the driver seat (near pedals) and seems to be Better o. full hot but not in 3/4 hot. I think that is a problem of flap position maybe loose or not positioned well that create some turbolences. When I'll go to visit dealer I'll make a video ?

For the gear noise, we'll try to add insulation material under the moquette of the back seats, trying to reduce noise from engine bay of some db and exclude the rattle from the cabin. I think to use dynamat or similar but I'm not sure about the results. probably BAD RESULTS.

I suppose a further issue from this is that while you may insulate yourself from the sound inside, the sound is still audible outside presumably.

Any bystanders would hear it which is not the sort of sound you would want them hearing either.

I am a bit puzzled as to why the box makes such a din? Did Lotus modify it a bit from original?

All we know is that when they stop making this, we will be properly, properly sad.Jeremy Clarkson on the Esprit.

@Alfo86 : @DJW is right, I'm totally agree with him. I drove the Manual Exige V6S, The Auto Exige V6S, It's a shame but the last one is far better to driver on road, not on the track because it doesn't manage very well big difference rev engine. As you can see :

1486285811-13-boite-fonction.jpg

I drove Evore S IPS, and Evora 400 IPS, the second one is better than the first one, better than a regular Ferrari F430, but same issue than the Exige, Don't go on the track with this kind of gearbox but on the road, the IPS is far better than a Manual Gearbox. And, It's very, very reliable !! One of my friend owns a Evora S IPS with 60.000km and other an Evora 280cv IPS with 80.000km. Zero Issue ! So, who says that the IPS is horrible ? Last year, I talked to a Lotus Customer who owned a Evora S IPS and now He drove a Manual Evora 400. He regrets the IPS.  If you can and if your dealer is agree, try to exchange you car with an Auto 400. I forget, ZERO NOISE with the IPS.

@DJW really thanks from your feedback, it's really helpful from my side.

So I don't know who have my issue! All 400 owners not have that, but inspector told me that a lot of coustumers have it... how many lies have I've to manage from them again?

I don't know why they don't want to change my air conditioning box, if anyone else have my issue! Really, I don't know.

I understand that is a difficult service (it's necessary to dismount all console/cockpit/bonnet), but if it's flawed it's my right to have one not failed... ?

  • 2 weeks later...

As promised, here the video of the air conditioning whistle.

As usual, lotus don't take this seriously told me that is a common issue. With the gearbox they could try to convince me, but with that aircon issue they definitely lost my patience and trust.

I'm not sure that is Normal as they told me, so I share with you to understand if it's true or not.

Waiting about your comment ?

I'd suggest there is a lip in the pipe work somewhere causing airflow differences, hence whistle.

Finding it however, would probably involve full dash removal...

That really is out of order for a Lotus engineer to state that noise is normal <_<

Someone with the evora 400 could be so kind to make me a 30 sec video that show that air coinditioning work fine? Just to have a proof that not all 400 have the same problem, as they assume.

@JayEmm @mcx @DJW @CocoPops or someone else can help me?

you're my only friends that can help me to demostrate that I'm not crazy enough to ask a guarantee service on that and pretend to apply my right to fix it under warranty.

please help. I really don't want to definitely take decision to sell car.

I think to open a separate topic called ^an help for alfo86^ where everyone can post video of air conditioning and cabin to demostrate that I'm not crazy and that the transmission and aircon noise are real and not normal.

He told me that every evora 400 have it, and they don't know how to solve it. All bullshit. Because they don't want to spend hour in guarantee to dismount all dash and change the air conditioning box under warranty.

I was thinking about your problems...

What do you think about sending your car to a small team of passionate guys specialized on lotus cars (even if they didn't work yet on the 400) ? Forget the official lotus dealership network. Ok you will pay from your pocket, but maybe it will be more efficient and not so expensive... If it was my car I will try something like that.

Did you contact the lotus club Italia to find someone who can help you ?

My dealer is a 20 years old one. They work with passion and they're happy to help if they have possibilities to do it. They know that there are some issues on the car and they tried to solve it. With transmission they made several test. With the clima too. But if they can dismount gearbox they cannot understand the issue. ?

I'll try to contact them tomorrow to find a way to solve it. But if they told me that I've to change gearbox... who pay 10k for it? I think that lotus have to do it. If I was sure that changing clutch I will solve the issue, I will cover the costs maybe... but if it wasn't, I cannot face 10k of new gearbox... additionally if it's under warranty.

Ok. I give in. Maybe I am going deaf? I am struggling to hear any major differences between Alfonso's video and Dave's.

Listening to them both, they are very similar to my wife's Honda Accord if you turn the fan up.
