Superb, just what I've been looking for. I've used GoPro extensively until now but this Garmin system looks way ahead for motorsports applications. I think I'll get one instead of the new GoPro 5.

@Dani It should work with it yes.

@The Pits As Dani mentioned, you might want to look into the new Ultra 30, which just came out. It comes with voice activation so you can start/stop recording quite easily, and a much bigger feature is the optical stabilisation. It's much smaller now too, practically the same size as a GoPro!

Thats an awesome stuff! What about the Garmin VIRB Ultra 30? Do you think that is also compatible with the OBD Dongle?

The Ultra 30 is compatible with ELM327 Bluetooth OBD dongles

Remember the stabilisation in the VIRB and also the GoPro 5 is digital, i.e. crop and shift, not optical/mechanical. That's not a necessarily a bad thing. Optical systems tend to suck hard mounted to cars, as the vibrations tend to make the moving optical elements (lenses or image sensors) vibrate and even resonate!

Both cams look very good for car use. It's nice to see that Garmin have upped their image quality. The Ultra 30 has the overlay goodness and the GoPro has the little one button remote and a much improved form factor now that it doesn't need the case. I'm tempted to get both

  • Lap count

  • Heart rate (when connected to a compatible heart rate monitor)

  • Cadence (when connected to a compatible bicycle cadence sensor)

  • Power output in watts (when connected to a compatible power meter)

A related question. I believe themileometerW is electronic. Is the total mikeage figure connected to the ECU so if you change the instrument cluster you can "recover" the mileage?

Hope that makes sense.
