Rear body fixings

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to locate all the body to chassis fixings and I'm confused about the rear ones. I've found all the front ones but according to the manual there are three at the back in the engine compartment but I can't find them. What am I looking for? Are they regular nuts/bolts like all the others or does the body have lugs on it that locate in holes in the chassis which aren't bolted down? Looking underneath the car I can see the cross member which is adjacent to the body and it has the shock absorbers mounted to it and then another couple of bolts either side which take the rear suspension by the looks of it. But I was expecting to see three bolts purely for the chassis mounts? Can somebody please point me in the right direction?

Thanks, Paul.

Paul open your tail gate remove the carpet and the sound proofing from the floor between the engine and the back of the car you should now see 3 bolt heads thats the 1's you are looking for.

P.S. there is 4 small bolts right at the bottom of the streeing colum you need to remove to if you havent already and they are a real pain to do.

and dont forget the 4 ( 2 each side ) down the side of the tunnel.

Hi Ian

Hehehe I wish I had some carpet :(

Okay, I don't have any bolts in the boot floor of my car - that would explain why I can't find them then!! Maybe the previous owner took them out and never put them back? Do these bolts normally have nuts underneath or do they screw straight into the chassis? I could only see two possible holes in the boot floor (one on either side which are full of crud and didn't really look like holes) but the manual reckons there's one in the middle?

Anyway, at least I now know what I'm looking for :(

Cheers, Paul.

Thanks for the confirmation - mine are definitely missing then. Do they bolt straight into the chassis or do they have nuts on the back do you know?

Cheers, Paul.

Steady on. That picture is from a turbo which is not the same as the series 1 and 2 cars having a revised chassis and removable boot floor.

My S2 has a metal strap running across the boot floor, just behind the engine cover. This strap is about an inch across with each side raised about one eigth of an inch to give it some stifness. There is a bolt at either end which, I think, goes into the chassis top cross member. I find it handy to store nuts and screws on when working on the engine as the raised sides stop them rolling away.

I'll see if I can borrow a camera and post pictures so you can see what I'm waffling on about.

Paul.

The bolts on mine screwed in to flat plates about 10mm think and fitted nicely into the chassis chanel with a drilled and tapped hole in them, but a nut with a washer would do the same job.
