Just picked up this totally original 84 turbo and it has Black bumpers as per factory spec. I haven't read the whole thread yet but that was standard on my car.

Lovely car Wayne - where did you come across that one? Can't believe how many early red Turbos have appeared in the last couple of months! What's the reg and chassis number? Dry or Wet sump?

Wayne, lovely looking car, well done on finding a decent one ,  as Stephen says,  these red turbos must be breeding,  2016 is indeed the year of the red esprit purchases :P

Looks cracking from the photo Wayne, giving me neck ache looking at it though. :P   I think given the costs that Barrie and Tar talk about for the dry sumps engine spares would put me off owning an esprit with a  dry sump engine.  I  think people are far better off owning wet sump turbos imo. :)

Look forward to seeing what you need to do to her to get her back to top condtion

Oh Buddsy - you have got me thinking again now! - I was convinced to get mine back to the original black - but you know I've decided to source a pair of bumpers so I can have the best of both worlds as the mood takes me! :)

By the way - is there a shade of black for the bumper?

Another shot of the Esprit when collected 7 years ago! -  how values have rocketed in the interim - £1500 was the princely sum paid for this lil' cracker - albeit with a rather dead engine!

What do you think, black or satin black?

:sofa:

I know, it's a red car thread but I vote for satin... on a black car I have to admit that it is a little less relevant:P

Something I learned about cars or planes, it all works until it doesn't anymore...sometime there is no way around it!

Satin black.

Although gloss black or body coloured are more practical. If anything marks the satin black there is naff all you can do about it as you cant polish marks out.

Maybe a satin black wrap would overcome this problem though?

I've really found it difficult to decide which I prefer, and now realise why.

It's because I prefer the black bumpers on the front, but prefer body coloured on the back, not that I would ever expect anyone to do that.

Which according to a recently placed Pistonheads advert is now for sale in my home town of Falkirk in Scotland (quite a distance from the last ad) by a different vendor - Alan MacDonald Sports Cars. I have tried to contact but received no reply as yet. Will try again today.

UK Sportscars website has been broken for several days which is rather odd.

Their video of a different red Turbo is still here:

No. But, were they done at the factory? Possible but unlikely. If someone specifically wanted them I am sure the factory would not have turned down a sale.

Mine had the louvres pained white (not factory) but are now back to black. There is a lot of very hot air and fumes coming out there and the white paint was not amenable.

In the Jeremy Walton first book there is a pic of a white turbo with white louvres. For me the louvres have to be black.

At the moment Im leaning towards leaving mine body coloured as original. For me there is so little in it as I change minds every day which I think looks better.  A decent paint job with which ever is going to be great Im sure!

As for gloss v satin on the black bumpers and louvres for me its got to be satin.

@Andyww Wow thats an epic vid! Apart from the HC and diferent seats that could be my car...aprart from mines got gold wheels! ;-)

Someone did, or perhaps the paint mismatch was vice versa, It was a silver Turbo that appeared in a classic car magazine shoot last year. The owner is on these forums; when someone pointed out that his "collar didn't match his cuffs" he didn't see the funny side!

Hi Wayne

Ive been looking for pics and I have to say from what I have seen there seems to be hardly any pictures of red turbo Esprits with black bumpers large gold decals and gold wheels so yours looks to be one of the few around!

Do you have any more pictures?

If I had mine sprayed with black bumpers and mirrors it would look very similar to yours as I see yours has had the triangle at the front of the door glass painted body colour where most black coloured bumpers have those black too.

Wayne...that's the first Turbo I've seen to have black bumpers with the later style A pillars. I'd always thought body coloured bumpers were introduced at the same time but clearly not.

This is an 84 MY car so I suppose it could be transitional as far as the decal detail is concerned. It had gold pinstripes around the air intakes on the skirts as well as down the A frames. Going in the paint shop tomorrow. It will remain in this trim though.

Well spotted Richard, I like that decal so it will remain after recommissioning is done.

What is the story with it?

Dave :)

It was the factory club of its time and I used to get Lotus World magazine through the door regularly. I had a CTL t-shirt too. Back in 83 I used to go and look at a neighbours Elite because it was the closest I could get to any Lotus in those days. I've got the same sticker unused stashed away.
