SJ Sportscars missing in action.

Recommended Posts

Has anyone contacted SJ sportscars successfully in the last month? No response to the phone line, engaged tones, phones switched to fax etc etc. Sent an email got no response either.

I have to try and get a refund on a part supplied that was not fit for purpose. The task of getting a tenner back off Steve is obviously going to be a highly stressful experience, and this isn't lessening the feeling of tense anticipation.

This has been mentioned over the years ever since we've been here. He's more than likely on holiday and hasn't changed his answerphone as he's too afraid of being burgled. Always the same, he really needs to work out how every other small business in the world manages it.

He must know it's someone wanting a refund!

I'll second that - took me a full month to get £50 out him........funnily enough it didn't take a month to take the money in the first place. The mans hard work and knows it all.......but it is what it is......he has the parts needed to get my baby back on the road, so I just kept my frustrations to myself and moved on:thumbup:

Pete at PNM is good and Paul Matty has always been helpful along with James at the SWLC. Totally agree Steve can be rather abrupt often but he does have a great website and cataloging system.

I use Steve most of the time but must admit when parts don't fit or are poor quality I tend to buy another rather than going into painful debates. Again it all depends on the value of parts and with the amount of people he is supplying it can't be easy to keep everyone happy.

He has had thousands and thousands from me over the years and we have still maintained a good relationship even through challenging episodes. I even bought my first S1 from him and Jane 23 years ago. I have always had the best service when I pop by and see him/James in person.

Dave :)

Also placed an order with them this week.  Had a confirmation e-mail from James within an hour of placing it on the website.

To follow on from what others have said - I also rang Lotusbits this week, took a while to get the phone answered but did in the end. Didn't have what I wanted and it took a chase phone call, but Dave did say they were short staffed.  Forget e-mailing them though, you need to phone them.

Good experience with PNM recently (they do reply to emails).

Thing with SJ - the have an awful lot of stuff you can't get anywhere else which Steve has arranged to have re-manufactured.  Its possible to do this yourself by taking old parts to engineering machine shops like he has, but its obviously easier to just click and buy sometimes.  I have had bad experiences with recon parts though, and you can go elsewhere for those and not necessarily stay within Lotus part suppliers.  A company called Pastparts refurbished my brake master cylinder and I am sure I got their name from someone on here.

Ben Hammett at Paul Matty is the man if you want a painless experience! Fantastic service and very helpful bloke. Also good at sending the right parts the first time round!

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who finds getting refunds out of SJ more daunting than wrestling a rhinoceros.  But I guess that's part of the charm. Steve is a bit curt and sounds stressed but knows his stuff. That and the SJ online store kicks ass.

Case in point, Steve arranged with his pet engineering shop to get my worn out  1:1 gear change relay mechanism refurbished having checked and confirmed  on Deroure.com that it was obsolete. Perfect and half the price I would have paid for it if it had still been available on Deroure. I can't say for sure but I'd bet that if I'd made my enquiry with most others it would have ended at the point he checked Deroure and I'd still have a rather vague gear change.

I've never been down there but I suspect Steve and the other guys there spend a good part of the day working on someone's Lotus rather than waiting by the phone for parts enquiries which is why they may not always pick up the phone straight away. When I've left a message, which hasn't been all that often, they have called me back.

Trouble is - and lets face it - he's not Argos !! So I kind of get the you buy it - it's yours kind of attitude.

Eveyrthing ive ever bought has arrived and in the time I was told it would.  He's short on the phone for sure - but I'm sure he could spend all day waffling sh&& to folks if he let them - doesn't earn the coin though!!

Must say I've never had an issue with Steve, always had the parts and helpful with the odd question I've asked him. Once when I did order something he thought he had and didn't in the end, he phoned and sorted the refund straight away. Another time he sent the wrong part, I packed it up, returned it  which he paid and got the replacement the next day, all sorted in a week from first ordering. If Robert at Stratton Motors doesn't have it, Steve is always my next port of call, or in some instances first port.

Yes usually around August September he does shut down and go on holiday, but if you phone before his holiday, he will usually tell you to order soon as he will be shut for a week or so.

Just to be clear the parts I wanted to return were minimal, a pair of paper cam cover gaskets for a than a tenner. It's not a fortune, but then again if you found a tenner on the street you would be happy wouldn't you! And try getting a tenner from someone else, especially a Lotus parts specialist.

What I was more concerned about, and assumed SJ would be, was that if they didn't fit my car they wouldn't fit any car; When the studs/holes were lined up at one side they were several mm out at the other. I sent pics and left messages with no reply.

Of course I may have completely misunderstood how to install the gaskets, but there is also potentially a bin full of gaskets waiting to confuse and disappoint a hundred other punters. A bit of info would have been good.

I've owned Esprits on an off for a decade and I have used Steve a lot.

I must have bought thousands of pounds worth of parts from him over the years and I have never had a significant problem.

I particularly recall sending him a radiator to have re-cored, and it was fettled and returned in less than a week.

It was on the back of his excellent service that I decided to send my Esprit all the way down to Crediton for him to do the clutch, crown wheel, timing belt etc etc.  That was a few years ago, but he did a first class job.

I rather like Steve's no nonsense attitude to customer service.

And if you think that Steve is a bit blunt, then you chaps must never have owned a classic TVR.

Steve reminds me of a mild mannered and charming version of his namesake, the late, great Steve Reid, who dispensed rations of his invaluable TVR knowledge in blunt Anglo Saxon.

Thanks for your alert.

I was going to place a huge order for my 1969 Lotus Elan, and better check it out before I give them my credit card.

Best Regards

Tony

I wouldn't discourage you from buying from SJ,  I have just purchased something which I didn't think was that great, and he has offered to refund me so can't complain.

My only caveat is on refurbished parts - I recently ordered a refurbished headlamp lift motor from Rimmer Bros, and to be fair that was no better.  Had to send the first one back, and the second works but the screw knob keeps coming off.  Just livings with it for now.

Hi @Nelly did you realise they have a reverse thread? Try screwing it in backwards!

Plenty of business done with SJ over the past year or two, all good. Also have had timely, sound responses to email inquiries.

No response whatsoever from LotusBits on an email inquiry for a minor interior part.

As to Lotus Garage, well . . . . . . 😬
