Yep thats the ball ache is getting the under tray off in the first place!

The filter housing drain plug will come with every filter cartridge, but no need to use it -- it may help reduce the oil-drip mess when removing the housing.  

You should get the proper tool to remove the oil filter housing, readily available from several sources ….. e.g. -- http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/151919516907?lpid=82&chn=ps&ul_noapp=true

Otherwise you will need sockets remove many  (~ 20 bolts/screws -- M5, M6 and M8) securing the under-tray, as well as a 14mm socket (I believe) to remove the sump drain plug.
