Standard exhaust wont help. Did my first track day in mine yesterday and it recorded 101db static!  That cancels out half the tracks I would normally go to.

How very odd. My standard exhaust has come in at mid-90s on every static test I've done in the past couple of years. No problems at Bedford even.

Yes, something wrong with that static reading, or exhaust!

When I did Bedford in my standard Exige it static tested in the 90's and was no problem on track, and Bedford is one of the toughest for noise.

Mine failed static at brands last year at 101 ( pig snout version)

My Exige came with the Lotus Sports exhaust and I had it changed to the standard exhaust in the hope of keeping below the lower static tests.  I managed to run at Brands yesterday on a 101db day but I think I was mighty close to the static limit (I'm annoyed with myself that I didn't ask what it was!!).  However, it does depend what rpm is called for.  I tested 98db static at Snetterton having been asked for 4,800 rpm which was the marshals call he didn't ask me about the redline, at Brands I was tested at 5,250 rpm.  I know that there is no point cheating these as the drive by will catch you but it seems to me the car is OK on the drive by limits, Bedford is always a concern being so much lower but a few people have run V6s there OK.

What rpm was the reading taken at Martin?

What do you guys say is the redline for the V6?

7k red line. I generally get asked for 5-5.2 at Snetterton once the noise tester realises it's a V6 rather than an S2! He normally wants 6.2 when I drive up...

Interesting how some of the later (even pre 350 sports) V6s are having problems with track day db. My old little V6 runs at about 96-98db never had a problem at Combe or Bedford (both of which rather strict on db)....

M4rk, I too was asked to rev to 5250 at Brands and got 101 db.

Exige S 8000 miles old. Had a fairly easy life until now (It was still on original tyres and pads and all looked like new at 7000 miles) so would be amazed if its lost any packing.

Standard pig snout.

Hoping to get a db check at Goodwood soon as that's my local and had planned a couple of track days there this summer.

Hi Martin, yes I was surprised to be testing that high with the standard exhaust.  The previous static I had, they asked for a lower rpm, I think they based red line on 6,500 and I wasn't about to challenge that.

I think Goodwood run 98db days and 105db days so you could struggle on the 98db day if they ask for the same rpm as they did at Brands.

It is a bit frustrating as none of the V6s there last week had any problems on track, even the other Cup 360 with the sports exhaust stayed out on track all day.  They seem to blow fairly loud on static but not too bad on drive-by, I guess the supercharger contributes to that versus a turbo.  My car has the high flow air filter so perhaps that makes a small difference, I am not sure?

Let us know how you get on when you visit Goodwood.

It could be down to the packing within the backbox being blown out by the supercharger and how well it had been packed in the first place. That might be why some exhausts are getting different readings. I believe the supercharger can give the packing a hard life.

My S2 Exige blew the packing out after a trackday and the exhaust was only 6 months old. It was an aftermarket one and got it replaced FOC.

Test today that I mentioned on another post, but basically got 97db at 5200 by using race mode and shutting the exhaust as that hols it shut until 5500 unlike touring where it opens at 4700.

Enough talk about exhausts...

Yesterday my friend drove my car to Luxembourg. I'm away in Italy shooting a big ad campaign for most of summer. First week of June I'm doing the Norway Road trip, then as soon as it's back it's got to have a few things sorted (rear clam needs a little paint, luckily insurance sorting it from the other party and very minor).

While it's being sorted I was thinking of maybe also doing:
 - LSD   (should I do lightweight flywheel while I'm at it?)
 - 60l fuel tank
 - Nitrons & ARB

Does anyone know what ball park I should be looking at for the labour on the above?

Will then do Komotech updates as soon as I get paid for the job I'm currently working on, so probably over winter

  • 3 weeks later...

Met Miguel Ander from Bell and Colville at Goodwood yesterday and he said that they have got Quicksilver to make exhausts for exige and evoras in both titanium and steel that will be quieter for track. Think he said they would be selling them very soon for those interested.

So along with Hangar 11 and 2tubular there may well be growing options soon.

You have to hope they've come to their senses on the tip design though. The "current" design is far worse than the stock nose...

It can't be the same as the Quicksilver "Sport", as that is advertised as louder than stock, so there is hope.
