Lotus Elite/Eclat/Excel (1972-1992) door window frames NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER

The informal Lotus Elite, Eclat & Excel Owners' Club, which operates via http://www.lotusexcel.net/ is pleased to be able to announce that, for the first time in over 20 years, NEW door window frames are available for these cars.

The original frames are made from mild steel and suffer from rust. This typically shows up as corrosion on the surface, and causes problems with opening and closing the windows. Although a few specialists are prepared to supply refurbished frames from cars which have been scrapped, the supply of new frames dried up many years ago.

Following a 4 year search, a plea on social media resulted in some assistance from ex-Lotus employees which led to the last company to make the frames. Fortunately, they had retained the jigs and still had a stock of the original folded steel section (which has proved uneconomic to have remade) as well as the original apprentice who started his career by helping to make these frames in the first place.

The first new frames, matching part numbers G075U0701F and G075U0700F but with a modern powder coat finish,  were made in May 2016 and have been running on test cars since then without problem.

The club has produced a fitting guide, which includes means to eliminate the self-tapping screws which Lotus used to attach the GRP door skins to the frames and which create additional corrosion points. Fitting can be completed in less than 2 days, and most of that time is spent waiting for glass adhesives to go off.

The new frames are priced at £305 each, or £590 for a pair, plus P&P, and the small profit made is used to support club activities. This owners' club is one of the few which does not charge membership fees, but funds all its activities through the sale of club regalia, calendars and, now, spares.

More information can be found on the LotusExcel.net forum at http://www.lotusexcel.net/ or by emailing the club rep., Angus Marshall, at [email protected]

Sounds expensive at first but a breaker charged me £100 for a mint 2nd hand item which had been stored for years, and there probably very few of those left. Well done Angus for putting the effort into a complex bit of remanufacturing

@alan.phillips have you tried Angus on Lotusexcel.net? They were producing the last few made from the original extrusion on the original jig. They are supposed to be the same ones supplied to LotusBits but worth asking.

:)

It's getting there......
