Original S1 upholstery question

Recommended Posts

Okay, we all love the Tartan, but not all S1s had it. My white car had the brown/beige with pleated seats. A few questions about the pleated seats:

1) Originally from the factory, were the pleats tuck-and-roll, or top-stitched?

2) Originally from the factory, how far apart were the pleats?

(I mention S2s because their pleats were probably the same method and spacing. . .)

Many thanks,

Tony :coffee:

Not quite sure if you're asking about the tartan or non tartan interior? The tartan pleats are sewn down the lines in the pattern so it's the pattern which dictates the size - whether they used the same sizes on the non-tartan interior I don't know. I can measure the size of the original tartan pleats if that helps?

With regard to the way it's sewn - the backing material is calico I believe and is flat. The tartan is then sewn on top of it down one side, filled with foam and then sewn down the other side by the looks of it.

Hello Tony,

For your interior from the white S1 Only the second can I answer and that is 5cm or 2 inches for the pleats.

You know I have the original interior so I can say that is correct. if you will I check mine and send you later any picture with measures.

Greetings,

Jean

Hi Jean!

Nice to see you on the forum!

Thanks for the clarification on 5cm/2in. As for top-stitched vs. tuck-and-roll, if you can see the stiches and they look like this: ---------- , then it is top stitched. If it is tuck-and-roll, the stitches are on the inside, and all you see of them are where they pass through two folds of material.

Paul -- I am talking about the non-tartan; the beige/brown seats. I guess they are all "pleated", aren't they! :)

Just to keep it up, I have a white S1 as well!.

Do they still do he cloth for the brown /beige trim, because my car needs retriming and I'd been told it was no longer available.

Look what Q's brought us. Isn't it nice!

My tartan pleats are definitely top stitched.

Hello Tony,

The distance between the lines on the headliner are 2 inches. So al pleats are 2 inches. And no stitches only lines (as you call it: tuck & roll).

If they still do the cloth for the brown /beige trim, than I am interested, not because my car needs retriming but nice to know that you can get it.

Chao, prosit,

Jean

Hi just to say my S1 never had the Tartan trim it had Cream Leather and brown swade.

Just wanted to say hi, Tony. Have not forgotten you; will send an email shortly.

Looks like you have obtained great support for the upholstry.

I was sitting here looking for something to do so decided to visit this site. You cannot miss with the advice obtained here.

Jean -- Thanks -- that's what I needed to know!

Brendan -- Thanks -- I knew about Nick Fulcher, but hadn't seen that page on LEW! He would be the person I would ask if I could not get an answer here (but as usual, this forum delivers!).

Steve -- The interior is progressing -- will have new pictures soon. Working on the dashboard at the moment, and it's looking great! I intend to put the new interior into the car in April . . .

(Everyone -- Steve is the guy who sold me the white S1! He rescued the car in the late 90s, rebuilt the engine, did a bunch of other stuff, and passed it on to me a year ago. )
