Possible future evora owner looking for advice!

Hi guys im currently looking at sinking roughly £30K  into an 2010 Evora with around 30k miles. Im wondering if any of you guys could give me a rough idea of costs in general, servicing mainly (Dont worry about mentioning insurance prices as they will be high due to my age (21)). Also im wondering if there are any major problems in the evoras and anything i should look for specifically when buying one !! Thanks alot guys.

no major problems but you must buy on condition and a fsh.

car tax cheap. Petrol circa 18mpg (really thrashin on the road) to 32.33 mpg steady state motorway.

servicing around £250, £450 for a big C service or a 60k miles ( needs new spark plugs).

oil - does not drink any.

tyres on the NA reasonable too.

what's to consider. Just do it. I spent £30k on a 2010 NA with 15k miles 2q months ago. Best thing I ever did....

good luck...

I came into this world screaming and covered in someone elses blood. I'll probably leave it in the same way.

Thanks for the reply. Ive loved lotus in general for years now and loved the curves yet aggressive styling of the elise however its just simply not practical for daily use! so i looked into the evora and fell in love. the only problem i feel when stepping in this direction was the price tag for a 7 year old car. i feel like alot of love and care could keep this car feeling new for at least another 4 years if possible.

Plenty of 20 year old Esprits out there that look and feel like new. Just do it....

More mony will get yo an older and inferior NSX.

Less money will get You A Megane or Focus.

Nuff said really.

Did someone mention an Ooodi. Oh, now you've  gone and done it. Go wash your mouth out with bleach. Yuck. Ooodi's. I hate ooodi's....

Nothing rationale about it. Just don't like 'em.

The important thing is that what you spend now you will pretty much get back if you can ever bear to part with it. Depreciation is glacial.

For example I bought my first at 24k miles and 2 years old from a main dealer. Put 20k on it over 3.5 years and traded it in. It was sold by the dealer for £1500 less than I paid for it.  Try that with an Audi or BMW.

Blessed with the competence to be a slave to the incapable.

Currently without a Lotus, Evora 400 Hethel Edition in Racing Green with Red leather and 2010 Evora N/A in Laser Blue and 1983 Lotus Excel LC Narrow body in Ice Blue all sadly gone.

The fact that 2nd hand prices for Evora's have held up so well is testament to just what a bloody good car it is. It's hard to think of an alternative that offers the combination of style, practicality, performance, exclusivity and above all handling.

It's never going to be a car that is cheap to run - it was an expensive car when new, but mechanically it's very robust. That's the advantage of running a Toyota engine and transmission - there shouldn't be any nasty surprises waiting for you. Most problems are going to be niggly, and if you're unlucky they can add up! One advantage of buying a fairly early car is that it's probably had any 'issues' ironed out already.

Okay, now I'm going to mention the clutch... There's no reason to think it's going to prematurely fail, other than the fact it's a performance car and may have been driven with enthusiasm, but when it does (it's a consumable item remember) it's going to be costly to replace -  circa £3k at a specialist, so you need to be aware of it. That aside, I can't really think of anything that's going to bite you, you just need to apply the usual common sense checks.

£450 for the big service? Mines booked in at Lotus Silverstone next week. It's actually costing just over £850?

@Taylor - spark plugs are over £250 from Lotus, you can get them retail for £90. Also, I am lucky in that I have a very good independent Lotus specialist so the pricing is keen. I think many early cars will be serviced by specialists, but also many still by the main dealer.

Took these prices just from a well know independents website:

Title Description Total
Regular Service 9000 miles
Regular service
195.60
Op 2a Oil and filter change
Required in special conditions 4500 miles
84.72
Regular service 18000 miles
Regular service + Op 7, 21 and 34
253.43
Regular service 36000 miles
Regular service + Op 4, 7, 21 and 34
323.99
Regular service 54000 miles
Regular service + Op 9, 21 and 34
253.43

Allon White, a main dealer are advertising their basic annual Lotus Evora at £295.

Castle Lotus, another main dealer offer these prices:

1st Annual Service (9,000):
£400
2nd Annual Service (18,000):
£400
3rd Annual Service (27,000):
£475
4th Annual Service (36,000):
£735
5th Annual Service (45,000):
£410
6th Annual Service (54,000):
£730

Even at £400 - £750 a service, that's bloody good for the performance on offer. You would easily spend then at a main dealer on a shed from BMW, or a barge from Ooodi.

Just sold my 2010 n/a

I put 40k miles on it in 2.5 years

Typically a service cost £300.  Rear tires were probably the biggest cost every 6k miles or so.

On mine all that went wrong was a door lock (replaced for £280) and tailgate struts failed.

I averaged over 30mpg and saw 41mpg on a long motorway run at 70mph on cruise

Overall about the same running costs as my Audi A6 3.0tdi Quattro excluding depreciation

Depreciation on the evora was £6500 over that time and milage

What was the depreciation on the Audi over the same time frame?

That's quite hard to work out, I bought it new with a £10k discount and sold it 7 years later with £118k on the clock, but I estimate at the mid point over the same sort of period it probably lost around £8-10k.

Over my whole period of ownership the Audi depreciated from list at £42,000 to pex price of £6500 (private about £8k.

The biggest cost in car ownership is depreciation. As others have stated, the Evora is glacial in that respect. In fact, in the 4 years you been able to have a driving licence your £30k would get you pretty much the same Evora!

Other costs (servicing, RFL, tyres, fuel) I think are pretty similar to an executive saloon. Lotus' aren't hard to work on and I've personally made the decision to do a lot myself; based on not trusting any garage to do work to the standard I expect and want. Which saves a lot. You can have a look at my ownership costs etc on my thread over the last ~7 years. Essentially I've spent £4.5k in that time (I have a spreadsheet;)) which covers absolutely everything bar insurance and fuel.

My advice is that you don't stretch yourself and skimp, the best Evora won't be the cheapest one so take your time making a sound purchase and it should be a fantastic buy.

This has helped me a lot and put my mind to rest on a lot of issues! I think I could handle doing some minor work myself with proper research and some tips. I work as a toolmaker so I'm Used to fiddly and precise jobs ?! But your savings are amazing ! Well done for that man ! I think this has sold me into evora owndership! I was giving up hope before I made this thread and considerimg waiting it out and getting a R35 GTR but 2 friends have them already so I can't wait to cruise in with the smooth yet aggressive looks of an evora one day!! Thank you again.

Did you use the evora as a daily driver all the time ?

thanks.

The problems with Ooooodis is that there indicators dont work and you would never be let out of a side turning. Not by me anyway. LOL

@Fraser100 my N/A wasn't my only car, but the only reason I had another car was because of some of the places I used to have to go overnight - public car parks. I don't need yo now so the 400 is my only car. Plenty of others also use them as dailies.

The biggest thing for daily use is that in tight spaces they are not the easiest to get in and out of. I just choose parking spaces wisely, but I do that in any car to avoid door dings anyway. If you can live with that then go for it.

Being as my 10NA has full Lotus History I may aswell spend the bit extra and keep it that way as its a really nice low mileage.

I can totally agree with not using the car in certain places which is a fear of mine but due to the fact i couldn't afford/don't have space for another car id have to grit my teeth and be super careful! Also i definitely wouldn't be driving a £80k 400 to the local ASDA ! Lucky you don't need to !

No......... I shop in Tesco and Sainsburys. The really funny looks come when I stop by wickes, in my DIY clothes, covered in paint. I've had some really funny looks at the local tip as well, a couple of times I've had to drop off some old electronics.

TBH, because it's plastic door dings are unlikely, you'd have to hit it bloody hard to cause any damage, it's just leaving it in "dodgy areas" or overnight in city centres that I try and avoid. That's not to say it's not cosseted, it is, I'm just determined to use it.

I've mellowed as I got older, at your age I was also 100% paranoid despite the fact that I was renovating our first house so my car was only worth about £1500.

I love parking in the parent and child spaces at the local supermarket (with my 2 year old in the back of the 400). The looks of disgust at the thought of some flash git in a sports car abusing the spaces, changing to confusion as my daughter climbs out is priceless....
