Whose S1 for sale is this?

Recommended Posts

Jonathon, that is a beautiful car.  Wow. Speechless.  BTW, what's a choke and why would it be manual?

Anyway, it's good to hear of living proof that you can own an S1 and not be a spannerhead. Thanks for sharing.  And, it's good to know that with the proper care and attention these cars can instil confidence that they will start, but not go to s Mediterranean island (which I'm okay with).

Thanks for your take on this car and the market in general. It's an interesting perspective and one that makes this car more interesting and potentially more worthy of the price being asked.

Everyone round here shops at M&S, just like everyone over in Eliseland shops at Topman. I've run the numbers, so I know.

Paul, £500 a year sounds pretty reasonable, so that's good news.  I too was incensed that the pipey bits and the spring thingys were red and not the other colour, but I'm getting over it, just like I did with that hideous fantastically original but non-original interior.  Nobody sees the pipes and springs and stuff, right?

Thanks again for your input, much appreciated and will go towards my question barrage.

Ha - thought I recognised my yellow history file!! These interiors are the coolest you'll ever see, no contest! The 70s Porsche pasha trim comes close but the Esprit tartan and orange is just sublime.

Mark, you probably were too young to have seen the movie but some of us did and It's the 40 year anniversary of the Spy Who Loved Me this year. Would be nice to have one for this occasion. Maybe a Lotus Forums S1 Spy who Loved Me Day? Get Roger to come along?

Fabian. You're right, it is the 40th anniversary of some old movie about flares and sexism, and if I can pull this off, a single eyebrow raising Spy Who Loved Me day would be epic.  Although this car is not a Bond replica. And, I can't believe that you lot have got me doing the Roger Moore thing now.  I'll be buying a pipe next.

Barbara Bach rarely makes public appearances these days.

Are you surprised - would you want to be seen out with Ringo Starr?

Practical Classics contacted Roger Moore's agent to see if they could do some sort of tie in when they came to photograph my car and were told that he hates the things. I think it's because Lotus wanted to charge him full price for one, crotchety old bas**rd.

RM states in the chapter in his Bond book that he did think the Esprit pretty poor, given it's on set reliability. More specifically it's publicity run through France to Cannes. Where it broke down on the Croissette and had to be left there. Lotus offered him one at half price, but he didn't even think that was worth it. He drives a Smart Car now I believe. I don't think it turns into a submarine. Perhaps mentioned above.

Mmm that's interesting. I was at an evening with Roger Moore in Guildford. Despite being desperate to ask him about the Esprit I restrained myself and then a guy at the front asked him what I wanted to. What did you think of the car? He said about it being unreliable but said he would have bought one but Lotus would only give him a 10 percent discount! Apparently he enjoyed driving the Turbo in Cortina?

Sounds great @Andrew C

Unfortunately my S1 may just be on the road by then, but sadly I doubt it'll be making Brand Hatch from North t'Yorkshire never mind the Hotel Cala di Volpe in Porto Cervo. Perhaps I can hire a black and yellow Bell Jet Ranger chopper instead?

Right, I have made contact with the seller, the car is still for sale, and so I plan to kick some tyres when I'm back in a couple of weeks.  I have a question set about ashtrays and circlips G2G based upon your collective views.

Now, does anyone know which early Esprit type specialist is closest to Gloucestershire?

Also, is there some part of this dark, wee-smelling corner of the Lotusland that recommends the commercial organisations that an S1 owner has to have on speed dial?  (GST? S and J?  Just initials to me).

And, can those of you that have managed to get your grandkids to post your ramblings online, send me the links, as my crack team of Russian cyber infants can't find them.

Awesome.  You guys are are the best.

Hi Mark, PMN engineering (pete knows everything), Lotusbits (Mike knows everything), S and J sports cars ( Steve knows everything) , Mark Stock coach works( built concours winners Jonathan's excellent machine and Jons paintwork - stunning Orange) . All great in their own ways and on the internet.

PMN near Manchester, Lotusbits Birmingham, S and J Devon, Stock Chelmsford.

Wish I knew that when I started!

Folk will tell you Steve at SJ Sports cars. Theyre based in Crediton Devon. Credit being the operative word, as you'll need plenty of that on your card. Probably not on this Bondmobile though hopefully.

Lotusbits near Rugby are your next best for parts and service too. They fit a flux capacitor straight out of 'Q' Branch to uprate your motor to 300BHP if you're inclined to jump bridgeouts.

PMN Engineering too, but I've only seen their Esprit Batmobile at LotusFest.

There are plenty of othe specialist though for engines and gearboxes. Wolverhampton being one, and I'll find out how good my gearbox Johnnie is sometime soon.

Others can chip in with the details, and where to buy the kosher safari suits, and the beat deals on slippers and Farah slacks.

Cool, thank you both.  Have found out where these dudes hide out in here and they all look pretty gen.  Noted and placed on speed dial.

The plan is to know stuff like this before I start.

Good job people.

Yeah, Lotusbits look like Oxford way.  Do they service or just deep rebuilds?
