Extra pipe on turbo, boost control?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've actually spent a friday night away from the pub and in the garage attempting to get the esprit running, what a puzzle, to remove one component means removing two more, hopefully work out why it won't start in the morning, that could be another subject, anyway...

I've always wondered what this extra pipe coming out of the turbo is, and now a lot is out of the way I've managed to get a good photo of it, any ideas what it is? There has been many suggestions but know one really knows! It's a bit hard to see from the photo, but the end of it does have something to open/close the valve.

Looking through the car's history, serious money was spent to rebuild the engine and with the later pistons, I guess this valve is performance related, either to increase boost or nos.

Cheers!

the silver pipe that goes down is your wastegate control, the splice into it with the yellow hose has me somewhat flummoxed. It looks as if it goes to an electronic boost sensor??? if you can tell me more about where those wires go from the plug that appears to go to that line. There is a possibility that it goes to the boost fuel module and increases fuel even more than the stock system would by changing the signal to the module. I don't know... please provide more information.

Modifying esprit's.. now that's fun..

Ah, looking at the photo it's not as good as I thought! The wires are in with the coil and not part of that pipe. The pipe just ends with the valve, I'll take a better shot in the morning!

Is the valve adjustable?

If so i would guess its a bleed valve which is a crude way of controlling boost.

Basically you can bleed a little pressure that should be going to your wastegate capsule to atmosphere and as such increase boost.

Lee... indeed we do... hehe... as for boost control.... what an odd method of controlling it.. Spring loaded ball valve is soooo much easier. I would remove that setup all together and replace it with a regular mechanical or electronic boost controller.

Hi Brent

It certainly looks like either a bleed valve to increase boost by allowing a small amount to vent rather than reach the waste gate actuator capsule or a boost pressure monitor. Does the wire on top go to a "black" box of electronics or were you saying its just a coiled up ?

EDIT-->>

On closer inspection it does look very similar to the boost solenoid valve on the SE/S4 etc... that allows over boost by limiting the air pressure reaching the wastegate. But our boost solenoid is inline rather than T'd off but maybe it was easier to do it this was on your car as it has a steel pipe for the boost line.

Brent, that orange coil HT lead is way too long! :)

I dont think its a very good idea having it resting on the Constant Energy Unit.

Yeah it is a tad, it's just for testing, still trying to find out why she won't start :) Have replaced a lot of parts now!

I've just tried to upload some new pics of this pipe, but it seems the server is down ;) The links are correct, so when it's up and running they should display!

Sure is an odd lookin' little device.?

Brent, let everyone know what you have tested so far. maybe we can help you get it started.

It looks like a copper line comming out of the brass compression T. On the top of the chrome thing, it looks as though you can rotate the square block. If this is the case, that is a plumbing ball valve you would use as a stop for a sink or toilet. If that is the case, you have an Arkansas boost control.

That is funny your right...!!!

Stop valve for water pipe or something, I'm guessing it would give you variable boost control.... just a little primative, expect to see that on flintstones type car!!! te he he.....

Have to put your miss's in the boot so she can help you fine tune it whilst you are driving....!!!!! :harhar:

Just remember to let her out when its time for dinner.... :harhar:

Cly, definately looks as though it's out of the loo, and yes it does rotate!

Apparently it is used to attach a boost gauge to monitor the psi.

Simon, love the idea idea of adjustable boost in the boot, don't think she'll go for it though!

P.S I've started another thread to work out why the engine won't start

Cheers,

Brent.

Brent,

Define "adjustable boost in the boot":harhar:

Quite funny about the Arkansas boost control! :harhar: I for one have not installed toilet parts in my Esprit yet!

On a serious note, we will try to help you sort out your engine.
