How long should the car battery last?

Recommended Posts

Mine in the varta blue one so assume in there since new I think. It is now kaput!

Ordered the varta silver one as recommended on another thread. Is this (3years ish) about normal?

The battery has been on a tender for the last year when in the garage.

Unlikely, it would have just been charging slower from dead but the trickle would have probably been the same. I've got the MX5 for my Elise from C-Tek.

There's a lot of info on here on batteries for the Evora and 3 years seems about the time they give up the ghost.

3 years is a little early I changed my Varta blue after 6 years had been on a Ctek in the Exige and got 9 years out of my Varta silver top in the Mercedes never been on the charger and was still going but cranking on cold mornings getting a bit slow.

Batteries can be a bit of a lottery you can check the charging voltage under load and the ripple from the alternator which is how well the diodes are converting the AC produced by the alternator to DC batteries don't like to higher ripple as not designed for AC voltage

Mr Stupid here noticed that neither of his two CTek trickle chargers would charge my battery any more, so I deduced that the battery was knackered. Therefore I buy a new one from that dealer in Conwy, North Wales (great service!). Then the car has a visit to Lotus Silverstone with the new battery in the boot ready to fit. "No need", they say, "There's nothing wrong with the existing battery". Arse. So I end up buying a THIRD CTek charger as well! That one works fine.

So I now have two dubious CTeks and a brand new battery cluttering up the garage.
