BOE Cold Air Induction kit

Recommended Posts

Was a bit surprised that nothing came up when I was searching prior to purchase so here's a thread!

I want to make my Evora more aurally exciting, after all a car that looks this good should also sound great and with the standard exhaust and induction it sounds rather flat.  I was in the US last week so I decided to order one and bring it back whilst I wait for a Jim special, at $500 (a rather convenient £390) it's not cheap, in fact it is expensive for what you physically receive but having read the long thread on anotherforum I was satisfied that BOE had invested a lot of time in coming up with a well engineered solution which is ultimately what you are paying for.

I think I'm in a fairly unique position in having the standard Lotus exhaust fitted so I can really show the difference it makes, annoyingly I struggled with time & GoPro setup ahead of the booking I had today (needed to get MOT done, passed with flying colours) so all I have now is a couple of fairly dodgy phone videos to share, hopefully I can get some better GoPro footage working next week but I think it still demonstrates well the difference.

BEFORE

AFTER

I'm giggling like a school boy, off throttle or very light throttle (cruise) there's barely any difference but under load it's loud without being deafening.  I'm not sure if I'd want it in a daily driver but in a fun car it's brilliant!

Managed some better footage yesterday, pretty much all induction noise (exhaust is next) so hopefully gives a good idea of what it adds to the car.  Loud when pushing on but not intrusively so with the windows up and barely there at all when cruising.

Now I'm over the initial, holy poo I'm loving it, adds a lot of character to the car without ruining it when lopping along at 70mph on the motorway.

Really like your editing at around 12 seconds  - the bit where you pull out to pass the cyclist, floor it and they get such a fright that they end up in a heap on the grass verge, .

On a serious note, it's good to hear the difference. I've already got a Jim special (valved) fitted and was contemplating an intake change but had concerns that the whole package would be a total aural overload. Sounds like my plan is back on again, .

, I was very well behaved and passed him slowly on the other side of the road, my father cycles a lot so I try and show a bit of respect.

I've got a Jim special (valved) on the way, hopefully arriving next week and won't take long to get it fitted so can get some footage.  In all fairness to the GoPro, it does a pretty good job of capturing the noise, if not the drama that comes with it.

I had the lotus sport exhaust, added the boe cai last year and changed to decat a couple of weeks ago. The sport exhaust had a nice sound, but the cai added a much stronger character. Like on the video posted above. The decat made the growl deeper. Loud (but within reason) when I push it, but pleasant at cruising speed. I can only recommend

I've got 2bular headers and Lotus Motorsport exhaust. I'm looking at the Komotec Carbon CAI but the BOE sounds great and is half the price.  Think I will need an ECU tune though with CAI and headers which is a bummer as both Hangar111, ES Motorsports and Essex Autosports are a bloody thousand miles away from where I live in Scotland and they are the only ones who can do the ECU tune.  Argh...................

I came into this world screaming and covered in someone elses blood. I'll probably leave it in the same way.

C8RKH, you might want to reach out to BOE.  My understanding is that their Evora tune (currently available for Evora NA but Evora S is coming) right now requires shipping them the ECU and they will flash it. However, they have indicated in the future that end users may be able to purchase the software and cable to enable them to do the flash themselves (similar to what they have done in the past).

They currently have three stages, including for the BOE CAI and headers (not sure if requires use of only their headers). Their stage 3 does require the car as they also change to BOE Cams.

Will do - looking at the charts I believe their stage 3 gives an increase of 80bhp or so at the wheels?  Which is wow!

i fitted an induction kit on my clio track car...   it is  totally epic addictive sound, similar to this, off throttle fine, but when accelerate ... it just sounds soooooo good..

think i may have just added another expense :)

I love my BOE induction kit. Works very well with the Lotus sports exhaust and decat. I'm still not sure about the whistling noise it makes with when the throttle is only perhaps 10% open. Sounds a little bit Fast & Furious :D

I was wondering if it was just mine that did that, was on my 'to do' list to email BOE about it so glad to hear it's not just me.  I started off a bit unsure but now I like it and it's very hard to hear with the windows closed.  Does also match up with what I read about the Supercharged cars sounding 'more Supercharged' with the BOE CAI fitted.

I tried to speak to BOE and ITG last year about a UK souced kit, but struggled.

The filter is made by ITG, shipped to US reseller, sold to BOE, added to their kit, then shipped back to UK! Lots of uncessary shipping and customs.

Has anyone heard the induction whistling noise from the outside? (e.g. if someone was driving your car past you) Is it as loud as sitting in the car with windows down (especially in a LHD car)?  I don't want to sound Fast & Furious at 10% throttle....

I can try and capture a video this week, I've found that it's quite easy to use a little bit more throttle and it quickly changes to induction noise rather than whistle.

A little bit more throttle is always good :-) If you have the time for making the vid then I'm looking forward to it. Otherwise I will ask my Better Half to drive past and I'll convince myself that she will not run me over (accidently)

I've been talking with BOE and they have confirmed that it shouldn't whistle so maybe something else has moved around when it was fitted.  I'll ask them to poke around next time it's in the garage and see if we can work out what's causing it.

Eh? Oh, that is a surprise as mine whistles as well... Sort of...

I'd definitely be interested to see what you find out.

I have the full 2bular Headers-Downpipe-Metalic Cat, connected to the Lotus Non-valved Janspeed Sport Muffler on my 2011 NA Evora, WITH a BOE CAI.

I do NOT have an ECU Tune with this set up, and have NEVER had a CEL, and the Air-Fuel Lambda mixture numbers are fine on the Dyno.

You DO NOT need an ECU Tune for the Header system and BOE CAI. There probably is additional HP to be gained with a tune and this set up, but it is not necessary.

Thanks for confirming this @Bobsy Racer. It sounds like if I add the BOE CAI we will have the same setup!

Did the BOE further improve the noise and did you notice any extra power? Was it in throttle response , mid-range, etc?

Thanks again.

The addition of the BOE CAI added only a very slight induction sound at cruising speed. The more throttle, load, and RPM, the more induction noise you hear. It's a pleasant sound, that is not overbearing, even at full song. I was concerned about excessive induction noise before purchase, but it is NOT a problem. It's a nice addition to the exhaust sound with the Header system, and I recommend it. When you remove the OEM Lotus Air Box system, and look at the restricted and convoluted path of the intake air, you will wonder how the engine ever performed with it. Besides, the CAI makes cleaning the air filter a snap.

It's hard to quantify, but I think that the addition of the CAI improved the throttle response, and the mid range torque. The sound plays tricks on you, but the larger direct air pathway has to benefit the performance.

BTW, I made an improvement to the BOE CAI Installation; See Post #831 http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/f170/boe-evora-cai-123964/index42.html
