ECU Software upgrade

Recommended Posts

Had my Exige in to Bell & Colvill yesterday for its annual service and when I picked it up, was told they had installed the latest software to the ECU. I didn't know what difference it would make or even if I would notice it, but on the way home, I was immediately struck by how the engine runs.

It never lacked torque but now, it's got a lot more grunt from low rpm in higher gears than it had before. It's also a lot happier when trickling along in traffic and feels more docile under those conditions but, of course, still has the usual get up and go when the road ahead clears. To top it all off, the engine has a lot more pops and bangs on the overrun in Sport mode which gives the car a more purposeful sound to it. So all in all, a very good upgrade for 25 quid. Very happy with it and must be the cheapest upgrade I've ever had on any car, bar none. ?

Why was it £25?? Genuine question.

Does the upgrade have a version number that may be shown on your invoice?

I noticed mine had an software upgrade to Level L, back in August 2016.

Hi Brent

This is very interesting. what year is your car please? is it a manual? I have rang my dealers as I now have FOMO ha ha.... especially if you get more pops and bangs :)

UPDATE: no recalls or updates awaiting my car (14 plate manual)<_<. I wonder if its an optional update?

Because that's what they charged me.?

So what was the reason for having it done?

If there was an issue why was it not covered under warranty?

Ok, having now looked at the invoice, I can see it was a level L software upgrade.

There was no particular reason for having it done as I was completely happy with the car as it was. However, this was a recommended software upgrade, so from my point of view there was no good reason not to. Had it made the driving experience worse or adversely affected it in any way then obviously I would have protested the cost and demanded the previous software be reinstated. Because it has materially improved the driving experience from my viewpoint, I consider it 25 quid well spent, especially when compared to the kind of money I've willingly shelled out on so called 'upgrades' to many other cars I've owned in the past. ?

So if you have a software installation lower than L, I would definitely consider this one.

I rang my dealers and they said my car has nothing due. It wasn't serviced at lotus last year either and service is due next month. So if there's been any software upgrades in last 23 months it hasn't had it.

Mine is a March 2014 car and I'm not aware of any other software upgrades offered in the previous 3 years. I believe the upgrade level L was only available from summer last year so if yours hasn't been seen by a Lotus main dealer in that time, then I suspect you probably don't have the latest available software.

My car is a manual. I seem to recall reading elsewhere that if you turn on the ignition whilst holding the trip button on the column in the on position, it will display the current software level as installed in your ECU. I haven't tried this myself, so can't attest to its veracity, but could be worth a try???

That's interesting. I hadn't seen the other thread before but his experience does seem to mirror my own. Nice to know it's not just a placebo effect. ?

Can you still rev match on downshifts with this new update?

Pretty sure I was, but I will confirm tomorrow when I take the car down to Goodwood. I only generally heel and toe when I'm on track and pressing on, so I wouldn't have necessarily been aware of it when I picked the car up. I would be gutted if pressing on the brake means it cuts the revs as some cars do though.

I'll report back on that tomorrow.

Having just got back from Goodwood, I can confirm 3 things.

1) You can still rev match on downshifts. Heel and toeing still works and you can rev the engine whilst pressing on the brake.

2) The car has become so much more responsive and pleasant to drive! Whilst I've always loved this car, I have occasionally found it less than easy to live with and slightly temperamental at times. No more though. It now drives and behaves like it always should have done and it is obvious this verson of engine map has been very well sorted. I always felt the engine was over fuelling, giving the power delivery a somewhat lumpy feel but now it runs and revs very cleanly, making me want to take it up to the limiter far more often than I should.

3) Whilst fuel consumption in this car has never really featured in my list of priorities, I today noticed it has used a lot less than would normally be the case on a return run to Goodwood, which would back up my theory it was over fuelling before the upgrade.

So overall, I am very happy with this software update and it is, indeed, the best 25 quid upgrade I've ever done to any car, ever!

Feeling curious so I've checked my new sport 350. Holding the trip button as you switch on the ignition does display the software version. I've got V7.03

That's the version of the dash software, not the ECU program level.

The L update has been out since middle of last year some time, and should be applied by your servicing dealer at service time.  The ECU reset that goes with the reprogram means that the car will be re-learning the fuelling, and any bad/old data will have been flushed, which is probably what you are experiencing.

Does that mean the exhaust tone change people experience will be short lived Dave and that its merely the learning process?

I have been quoted £108 from dealer I bought car from to have it installed on my car as I had it serviced at a lotus specialist and not main dealers.

It sounds like Brent has noted a step change before and after and sounds like he has done a fair few miles now..

Do you get any details Dave as to what they change with these updates?

It's possible they have made changes that will have an affect, but usually pretty minor.  Also depends how far behind your previous program was.

We don't get details on changes made, but I suspect they were working on idling and MAF issues on the V6 cars.

That's some price to do the programming... what is the hourly rate!?!

Mine is a 2014 car so potentially a 3 year old version now.

I was told they could do it for "one hours labour" so £90/hour to get the £108?

I think I want it doing though so will probably just bite the bullet. probably more a case of FOMO than anything else<_<

So after reading this thread, I enquired about the software update yesterday when I took mine in to B&C for its annual service. Picked it up today and they mentioned that "L" is outdated and the latest software is now "N" (which is what I now have). Apparently "L" was only valid for about a week or so?
