A journey into track days

Bedford is definitely on my 2018 hit list, sounds like you had a great time. An interesting day with the rain and low sun, i know from road driving that is hard enough, let alone when you are on a race track.

I am also looking for a Brands and Silverstone day to add in April/May.

Want to ensure i build momentum after having David and Jack training me at Silverstone/Goodwood respectively.

Sunday has come around quickly! Starting to feel excited and nervous in equal measure but not looking forward to the early start; I will be trying to get an early night but I am sure my mind will be in overdrive like a kid on Christmas eve!

The helmet has come out of the box ready for Sunday, very pleased with it and would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a new lid. I bought it from Ben at GSM performance who were just superb, both in terms of price and service. IMG_1464.thumb.jpg.61e1b822c40e3c5bd0cabfb29ad1c68a.jpg

As for extras, aside from money and water, I have kept it light.

Thanks to @LF1 and @Bibs for the glove and shoe recommendations - both i would recommend 100%.

At the moment it is raining Saturday and Tuesday onwards in Towcester so hoping the Scheduled sun stays on Sunday and doesnt shift!

Will report back afterwards and look forward to others sharing their days/videos etc on here over the coming season.

Hi Alastair. The kit looks great, well advised.

I mentioned previously that I was looking for another date before my Brands Indy booking on 25th Feb. So, a couple of days ago I booked a return to Bedford GT this Saturday 10th Feb.  Looks like its going to be cold and wet....perfect!! Only good thing is that the really smart folks will stay away, so should be lightly loaded.

I'm up for an April visit somewhere. Lotus on Track have Hethel 7/4 and Castle Combe 20/4. There are also a range of dates for Brands with the usual trackday companies and Silverstone GP is available 3rd April. Have a word with David and see what he recommends.

Yup, your going to be buzzing. However, your in great hands and if it rains you may get a little 'drifting' instruction. David's good in the wet....I know that's true 'cos his Dad told me!

Looking forward to the report back. Enjoyment guaranteed.

@Colin67 will check my availability but both options sound good to me. Up for getting one of them booked.

@Bravo73 I know right! I bought stuff that should last me a long time and ticks the right approvals. Even if I was the fastest guy out there it would all stay in the car so aside from the shoes no one will be seeing the rest of it anyway; I am even debating wearing normal trainers and changing the shoes in the garage. I got great deals on the gloves and shoes so the only splurge was the helmet. I blame @GFWilliams for putting all that carbon porn on his thread.... ?

Dont forget the HANS if you drive with 4pt or 6pt harness ...

seriously ... there was a deadly accident just last year at the Salzburg Ring where a guy in his GT3 RS hit the barrier straight on and broke his neck due to wearing the 6pt harness and a helmet.

If he just would have worn a HANS or even just the 3pt he most likely would have walked out w/o any major injuries ...

Or don't crash!

You never know - even the best / most carefull driver - you can always have a technical issue that leads to an unavoidable crash or run into a situation thats beyond your control (somebody crashing in front of you or a simple coolant spill) ... the likelyhood might be very low but the outcome could be catastrophic ...

This is exactly what I've concluded recently - will only install 4pt together with buying HANS and compatible helmets.

I can recomend the Simpson Hybrid Sport or Pro: https://driver61.com/product/simpson-hybrid-system-pro-lite-head-neck-restraint/

Its realtively comfi to wear. Took me a trackday to get used to but ever since I do not really notice it anymore while driving on track.
For the drifters amongst us ( @GFWilliams ✌️): depending on your drift angle, you might find it hard to still look out the side window while fully in action... could be a bit dangerous than ?

Btw: there are different versions, you certainly do not have to go for the most expensive carbon (pro) version...

Hi Alastair. The old hands on this forum are  going to recognise all the signs.....you are now a track day lifer.

You are also now properly acquainted with your car. Getting out on track is the only way to realised the potential of the beast. There is some serious race proven capability in that package.

Smart move to have David Pittard alongside and it sounds like he did his usual fine job.

I nearly dropped in on you as i was returning south from my track day on Bedford GT yesterday.  Only 34 cars on track, majority put off by the forecast of heavy rain, which arrived about 11.00. Really slippy, but funnily enough I enjoyed it. Had to be way more careful, but I have good rain tyres, Toyo R1R's and they are very reassuring in the wet. However, it was hard to warm them up on such a big circuit with low temps. Presumably you had the same problem today.

Goodwood is going to be a fun day. It's a new track for me and there will be a good crowd there. Hopefully you will be able to get your wife onside with your new found money pit as a trackday enthusiast!!

Did you chat with David about a suitable choice for an April trackday?

My next outing is 25/2 at Brands Indy, then the Goodwood meeting of 24/3. So, if you still fancy an April Trackday, let me know because I am definitely up for it.

Presumably you now have your videos and have probably already relived the experience. That VBox package is good isn't it.

Sounds like you had a great day!  Always good to see a 'well-used' Lotus.  You certainly had changing conditions to deal with, I'm glad you had a couple of dry runs because you really feel what the car is capable of but it is also great to see how well you can handle them in the wet.

You'll be looking forward to your next day now...well after you have cleaned your car of course. :)

OK, I'm in Alistair. I've just booked the April 7th Hethel track day with LOT.  I hear what you say about trying to take it all in and then putting it into practice. It all seems so natural to the racers, but it's bloody difficult isn't it. However, having done a few track days since my initiation with David last year i do feel i now have good basics....just need bigger cojones!!

Let me know when you confirm booking please .

Greetings Arun. It will be nice to put another face to a name. Maybe a few more will sign up?

Start a new thread in the trackdays section, that might encourage more TLFers along :)

Quick question - front end protection.

My front is now covered in around 5-10 stone chips.

I know from Jamie at B&C that a full front end respray is around £300 so do you guys accept it happens and get it redone periodically or does something like xpel ppf stop this and hence something i should consider?

Hi Alistair, reference the stone chips. When i bought mine I had the front protected with one of the transparent films called Ventureshield. I know it works because whilst following a garden landscapers truck,  towing a low sided trailer,  I watched as a bump in the road shot a rock about 35mm diameter up in the air and into my path. I had nowhere to go, continuous facing traffic and the guy behind too close to brake. So, I watched this thing in slo-mo as it hit me. Upon examination It took a chunk out of my splitter, then bounced upwards and hit the bodywork. However, the film showed only the slightest scuff, zero damage to the paint underneath.  I'm thinking these films might be cheaper now but mine was £600 installed.
