The best cars tend not to hang around at Matty's, I'm not sure what more you could have done. Sales do fall through sometimes though, it would be worth staying in touch. Paul Matty might also know of other turbos in great condition that might be coming up for sale at some point. Anyone here thinking of selling an HC or other mint Giugiaro Turbo? My advice is to PM Paul right away! Arguably the ultimate G Turbo is currently for sale: http://m.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C864651 It's a lot of money obviously but imagine what Enzo Ferrari's own personal, uniquely modified 308 (if he had one) would be worth today? Thanks Jonny, yes still licking my wounds over that one, think I'll be scarred for life and maybe I should have fought a little harder as I could see Paul would have been happy for me to have it but he wanted to do the right thing by the other interested party which was fair enough, first time I've met Paul Matty, certainly a really nice man and no hard feelings. He did have a lovely S1 Elise over there with 8K on the clock which would make a nice addition to any Lotus collection so may be worth considering, my next move will be to go over to UK Sports Cars to check out the red HC but really got my heart set on a white one. 8 hours ago, stephenwhyte said: @Vipers Not an HC but a Turbo with an interesting history....... http://m.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C867367 Thanks Stephen, that could definately be worth considering. 1 hour ago, Pat H said: Yep, I sold it to Paul Matty last week. Hi Pat, you have got any other Esprit's knocking about have you in the same condition, such a beautiful car, must have been a tough decision to let it go. Im going to get one done saying "1985 Turbo Esprit Owned by Colin Chapman" I think that should add about £50k to my car. buddsy Well if you did that I think you would find it very hard trying to convince anyone of that considering Chapman died..... in 1982!! More info here : No this is where I was thinking. Some people have suggested fire extinguisher but they are painted to match the leather and have no identifiable purpose. Also looks like there's a rectangular impression left behind

Really I had no idea... (I was joking by the way) I was just trying to add people should be careful putting too much worth in a little brass engraved plate. The one above looks like a previous owners home made additon to me. That or maybe the selling dealer. Doesn't look like something Lotus would add if you ask me. The plaques on the slightly later limited editions were gilt silver I think? buddsy Quote "Belief is the enemy of knowing" - Crrow777
G_Reaper 170
Hi Alll The cars Motor Show Provenance was confirmed by Andy Graham (Lotus) also the plaques were fitted to all cars that were displayed at the option of the company displaying. The company displaying the vehicle had to be prepared to pay the £88 pound for the cost of the SOLID SILVER plaque. The plaque fitting was a one off occurrence to celebrate this event because the "Motor Show 1985" was also the official opening of the Glasgow NECC venue by Her Majesty the Queen. Back in the eighties the yearly motor show alternated each year between Birmingham England and Glasgow Scotland, 1985 was Scotland's turn. I hope this helps. G_Reaper 170
Better photo attached. However still not representative of how good the car is in the flesh. Edited May 9, 2017 by G_Reaper2

All the best with it all anyway.....Did I read Paul Matty's themselves as a business are up for sale as well? Yep, I heard that PM was thinking of retiring. But he certainly doesn't show any signs of slowing down. Mixed feelings about selling the Esprit. I am in the process of buying a cheap Seven for a bit of fun, which will soften the blow somewhat. But it was definitely a knot in stomach moment when it was winched onto the transporter. I hope the new keeper is pleased with her.
nello 337
Talking of those plaques the one thing I've never liked about the 21 years at Hethel versions (the 2-tone ones) were those and the script down the sides. I always thought they looked really naff with those on and almost dare I say it 'Halfords!' (apologies to any owners offended!) The other bits were ace with the pigskin duo trimmed interiors. Did they all have fitted luggage as standard or was it just that one image that is the only one anyone seems to have.
G_Reaper 170
Here is a better photo of the plaque after a quick clean it really is quite striking.
PhilW 400
Nello 99% that luggage was standard. I know one person witha car and luggage. I was close to buying a red one a few years ago. Unfortunately the luggage was missing.

I do realise I may have come across a bit aggressive? Sorry that was not my intention. In the pictures it did look like it was made from brass and I couldnt see any hallmarks. I was just trying to warn people of putting too much faith in being told a thing even if it's engraved on a plate. Its always best to get confirmation from Andy Graham to be sure Do you know who was it who displayed the car then? A Scottish dealer? buddsy Quote "Belief is the enemy of knowing" - Crrow777
G_Reaper 170
No Problem Buddsy. I presume it was supplied/displayed by Lotus Cars as this was the National Motor Show for the UK 1985. Cheers Mike

Describing it as "good usable condition"not "Superb" or "Immaculate"or "Show Condition" and it is a car that has covered 100,000 miles which having been restored has the wrong decals and cheap tyres fitted begs the question what other short cuts may have been taken? Just my opinion it may of course be stunning in the flesh. Cheers Mike Edited May 12, 2017 by G_Reaper2

ChrisJ 1,473
@nello - we have a dry sump & a wet sump register. Is there one for the HC G cars?
nello 337
Don't think so Chris. I've scribbled a few down that I've seen over the years but had always wondered how many there were before the shape change but as mentioned one of those Authenticity certificates from Andy Grahams archives noted there were 136 I believe - which I think was to shape change in '87 when the X180 came in. I was always under the impression it was just the way to move on the final batch of Giugiario bodies with the new HC engine in.
Vipers 455
Even though I've decided to go down the Cup 380 route I'm still keeping my eye out for a S3 Esprit and just seen the below, that has certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons that's for sure as looks like a really nice example, what's the chances of 2 really nice Esprit white S3's coming along in a matter of weeks, doesn't mention the mileage but may make a phone call on Monday, anyone know anything about this car? http://www.uksportscars.com/view/lotus-esprit-turbo-1985-monaco-white-full-red-leather-interior/ Quote Specialists In Quality HiFi For the Home Plus the UK's Only Dedicated Highend Headphone Shop [email protected] - 01767 448121 / www.hifilounge.co.uk / www.highendheadphones.co.uk Please Follow My TLF Blog Here - http://www.thelotusforums.com/forums/blog/88-vipers-lotus-and-hifi-blog/

910Esprit 531
I think you're right. If so mileage will be something over 74K. Would have cost you a little over than £7K four years ago! from the same seller (unrestored) Edited May 21, 2017 by 910Esprit
The Pits 4,408
Completely irrelevant what it cost some years ago. Esprits are still too cheap compared to many of their contemporaries and if that car is a good one it's a bargain for someone that likes restored cars. No idea who did the work, something like that should be fully documented. I would proceed with caution from that dealer.
910Esprit 531
Its just a point of interest that they were selling it off at less than the 2013 market value - A dealer not generally known for their altruism. Not too keen on seeing after market shocks on a restored car. Fully agree with the other points you make
