Clutch recommendations?

Recommended Posts

I need to purchase a new clutch for my 88 Esprit. I would like something stronger than the original, but not so strong that it becomes a chore to push.

I'm not looking for maximum performance, rather maximum reliability. If you could recomend anything/place stateside I would appreciate it.

Brad,

I'd suggest contacting either JAE parts or WC engineering to see what they recommend. I can't offer any suggestions as I haven't had the need for a new clutch just yet, but sure it isn't far off now that I have the ecm in the car and chipped.

H Brad,

If you like you might take one of our new uprated clutches. These are very easy to install (=identical shape/pattern like the stock one) and donot change the pedal force. You wont feel any difference to your stock one

It comes as a complete kit incl. throwout bearing.

Marcus,

Do you offer clutches that use less pedal effort? My clutch makes my foot cramp in traffic! My RX7 clutch which is a pull style clutch by ACT(Extreme duty) is very light and is almost like nothing at all after driving the Esprit!

I can only add that I have Marcus' +25% uprated clutch, and the pedal pressure is the same as stock.

Very happy with it!

Hi Artie,

the stock S/SE/S4/GT3 clutch is not heavy at all. The only one that is really heavy is the stock S4S one ! (Some of you might know, that I donot like this stock S4S clutch layout at all)

IMHO, your old clutch is somewhat knackered/worn and thats why it is very hard to push.

Believe me, if you install an new stock clutch, or peferably our +25% one  you will be very pleased how easy it is to use, indeed.

Cheers

Cheers Marcus,

I'd kind of thought this was the case. I haven't experienced slipping yet, but I am making substantially better power than my standard turbo originally made. I did plan on upgrading later this summer, I'll be installing an automotive lift in my home garage soon so hopefully she'll last til then.

Brad,

All 4-Zylinder esprits MY88+ use the same clutch setup except the S4S and the S300.

Its only the S4S and the S300 that use a different one that has a different bolt pattern. Of course the S4S/S300 flywheel also is different. BTW, the S4s/S300 clutch is horrible, IMHO. Its way too heavy to press, it does not offer much more performance (=torque ability) than a stock SE/S4 one, its fairly unreliable and its expensive.

You see, the clutch they offer is NOT suited for the S4S/S300.

It looks like a plain replacement stock clutch for the S/SE/S4/GT3 which would fit your car.

Did you see, they also offer a better one, its #SJ082Q0010. This one should be similar to our +25% one, I guess.

SJ Sportscars offers a clutch kit (item number SJ082Q0011)

Has anyone used this kit? It states in parenthesis (4 Cylinder excl. S4s & 300) is this similar to the stock S4s kit?

Danke , Marcus! Always a wealth of knowledge and expertise, great to have you cruising around these parts! I found a second hole in my clutch pedal and moved the pushrod to the clutch master cylinder to this hole!!! WOW, I noticed the shaft to the clutch master cylinder from the clutch pedal was actually angled, not straight in....Previous owner had a shop work on this Esprit and they didn't know what the hell they were doing! Glad Harry Appleby did the head job 3 years ago! Anyway, the clutch feels much more "normal" still a bit stiffer than my RX7 but much less effort than with the pushrod going in at an angle!
