removal of V8 wing from GT3

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

if I take my V8 wing of my GT3 what holes will I be left with on the boot lid? Anybody got a picture of this? And how would I plug the holes?

Just thinking about trimming some weight of the car, and before any jokes start, yes it would go faster if I shed a few lb's, but lets be honest which is easier, removing a wing or 5 months of hard exercise??

cheers

Alex

Should be 5 holes total, four bolt holes (two either side) and one hole for the brake light wiring.

Best way to lose them is to glass them up, costly though as you'll have to get the tailgate repainted either completely or depending on the job locally around the repair. - You've got to decide if you ever want to refit the wing or not though.

I agree.....

Or else keep yours 'as is' and buy a tailgate from an S4s and repaint that!!

When the holes are filled, they will tend to shrink over time and will become visible....

Ditch the spare wheel instead or get some of Jons ultralight panels!!!!!!!!!

I dont have a spare wheel, the air con adds weight, and so do the v8 seats, but I like the comfort on my ass. Looks like a Gym job!

Personally I hate those hulking great V8 spoilers, they are completely out of proportion to a slim bodied 4 pot car. HOWEVER the sentiment above is correct; strangely mine came with an S4 wing from the factory and was removed by the PO. However the "paint job" to cover them up is horrible and the holes have sunk. If you do take it off you may have to paint once now and again in 5 years time.

I may put my wing back on just to cover the damage.

In the garage no-one can hear you scream

I took the wing off my gt3 - i just ran with some black carriage bolts blanking off the holes - virtually invisible, refitted the wing to sell the car.

I also took the wing off my v8-gt - had a local body shop fill/paint which looked fine. Yes there was a small amount of shrinkage over time but you'd have to be really anal to notice or worry about this. I had this done at the same time as colour coding the rear number plate plinth and light surrounds (as 2001 spec) wasn't that expensive but I can't remember the actual cost.

V8-GT and GT3 both have the large transom so they don't need a spoiler, in fact it adds weight and according to lotus you should not run a spoiler if you have a large transom (promotes understeer). It also looks better without IMHO..!

My GT3 has luckily never had a spoiler and I think it looks great without one. No plans to put one on and certainly like it the way it is.

Hi Alex,

IIRC all GT-Models (GT3 and V8 GT) came without a wing from factory.

IMHO you should remove it and sell it to some ricer/racer boy ... ;o)

Plugging the holes with good, flat blanking caps is not a problem.

I removed the wing from my V8 and fabricated a thin strip (approx. 25mm wide x approx. 177mm long x 1mm) of aluminum sheet. Slightly rounded the corners, bent the piece to match the contour of the area where the holes are and used double sided 3M trim mounting tape to attach. Had the pieces painted to match. Looks awesome and is solid. You can always remove if you want to reinstall the massive and useless wing!

I've seen Bill's car in person and it does look great. Most people wont even notice the aluminum pieces.

Your solution sounds interesting, could you post some pictures for us to see how it looks?

thanks
