I'm weak - yes - and I've been bad again...

I have all this to do on the S3 turbo. Kind of dreading it as it's been idle for 8 year's, although it did have an engine and gearbox rebuild before being parked up. Engine is coming out as rear bulkhead needs repairs, bot fuel tanks rotted out, obviously belts etc to be changed so its all coming out. Friend of mine is making a set of tanks in stainless steel so will last the life of the car. Bulkhead, not sure hows best to go about that one yet. Thinking cut out the bad areas, replace with marine ply and glass over it to give rigidity. Was hoping to have started on her by now but the S1 that came from the states has been delayed in the paint shop, so didn't want to have another car in bits while waiting for the S1. Also have the Excel to get finished, it's almost done. And now a couple of Elites maybe coming in for a work over. Enough to keep me busy for a while. Need a bigger shed. If I get the house sold then an old croft with BIG shed's will be our next home. We don't need three bedroom's, but I DO need a bigger shed.

John there are alternatives to marine ply http://www.totalplastics.com/products/253 or there is an mdf http://tricoya.com/

Lots of bits now have arrived - awaiting some stainless bolts. well pleased with the powder coating I picked up today - just sanded off the fins and feeling happy even the old manifold

Chargecooler not stripped enough apparently - and I don’t want it blast cleaned Not sure the missus shared my enthusiasm tonight

Van dropped off for service and a load of warranty work this morning. whipped back home - adjusted exhaust. Checked and double checked everything. connected battery, ignition on and off a fe

So I did manage some time today on the car.

steam cleaned and decreased engine and engine bay.

Manifold removed with fire and cursing.

list of parts to be ordered next week now. Did notice however that some complete w£&ker specialist garage who had previously done the head work on this car a few years ago did indeed damage something and just ignore they had, much like the rear hub which they knackered. The exhaust camshaft pulley has been dropped and has a bloody great dent in it on the edge - so there’s something else I need to buy.

Huff.....

On the bright side at least the smaller engine will be easier to get back in. Might not even need that tractor...

It’s very clean - I’m guessing the oil cooler collar that I was able to wobble up and down which helped in the access to disconnecting the oil lines shouldn’t have wobbled up and down - hence why that area resembled the Exxon Valdez oil spill

I'm slightly disappointed to see LC spec non-laminated manifold gaskets in there.  If they are the same as the original Lotus spec,  I've found them to rot and then blow out.    I'd be tempted to fit the Gary Kemp versions from Ebay.

I've covered nearly 7,000 miles since fitting the Alunox exhaust manifold using the gaskets they supplied. Not had any leakage problems at all. The engine was taken out 4,000 miles after I fitted the manifold, and there was no evidence of leaks at that time either.

I doubt there has been any failures, otherwise they would have been posted.   However over a longer timescale and higher mileage, I had 2 failures of those type of metal faced 'paper' gaskets in a mildly uprated motor,.  Would Lotus have upgraded from a £10 gasket set to a £100 gasket set, if there was no need - especially as they still flog the £10 sets for the lower power Turbos.

I haven't heard of any failures from anyone using the Alunox exhaust gaskets either, and that's been my experience, too.

In my case, the engine is usually out so regularly, I don't consider it to be much of an issue.

Exhaust studs out - all bar three half snapped ones where the blow was <_<

fire and swearing will be lavished on those in the week.

Red bits dropped at the powder coaters - im gonna do my exhaust hanger bracket red at the same time. Just stripped the chargecooler with a wire wheel on the drill.  To do the lot - £60 - now that seems a steel - let's see what they come out like later in the week.

ordered some cold galv brushing paint - will splash that on the engine bay next week.

sj list to be ordered this week

we have progress all be slow
