Refilling Coolant - How To Drain Chargecooler System?

Recommended Posts

Hi Experts, quick question....

On S4's (not S4S) produced prior to Dec 93 there are separate cooling systems for the engine and for the chargecooler. The service Lotus notes only described procedure on draining and refilling the engine cooling system, but there were no instructions on how to drain and refill the "separate" chargecooler system. What is the procedure of draining and refilling the chargecooler system?

Thanks in advance!

Erik

Good question...

Having followed the procedure on LEW, the process seems to be more about 'flushing' the system rather than a drain and refill. I did this on my 'single' tank system and it worked a treat although it did take about 6 long attempts to master the process.

An easy way to drain the system I guess would be to disconned the feed to the C/C pump/impellor but its a pig to get at, or the pipe connection to the C/C rad.

To be honest I think I would just flush the system as per LEW and be done with it unless you have some specific reason for draining the C/C system.

Unplug it.

In front of the passenger side wheel arch are 2 joined aloominum pipes going to the CC rad from the tunnel, thats the lowest point - unplug these and coolant will pish out of the system and the CC rad....might be also worth undoing the plug on the chargecooler so the air can get in to allow the unit to drain.

I find that when I refill mine, connecting a hosepipe to the outlet pipe of the chargecooler helps to prime the system. Otherwise you can't get the air out and the pumps should run dry and won't pump air.
