Oil Sump Plug

Recommended Posts

I have difficulties to undo the oil sump plug on my Excel. it's made of brass, and was tightend too much by far . Now I ended up with a rounded plug...

I think I have to flatten it and use a molegrip in combination with brute force. But this is an Excel thingy only, or is it the same with the Esprit?

Plug is the same as a Landy, that's what I have heard on the Excel forum... :realmad::whistle:

Sump plug for Lotus use goes back years and years A036R6014Z (type 036 was original 1960's Elan) plug with fibre washer A075W4055Z, both are Lotus part numbers not common to other makes, tho no doubt as it's a standard NATO issue thread other things will wind in it. This is for the 4 cyl 6.5 litre capacity sump & also V8. The plug and washer we have lots in stock all the time.

Ther larger 7.4 litre sump for 4 cyl's used a Socket head plug and O Ring A911E6343F & A912E6694F, again we have zillions of these

i've checked with the techhy boys and the key to fitting it is tighten to 34nm and do not put any gloop on the thread it's the washer or O rings job to keep ya driveway concrete clean.

hope this helps

Gooner

Hi jimmybondi, just come up with the same thing on my esprit, plug as been knackered then replaced with a load of gunge around it.Have yet to remove it but was worried the stuff smeared over was hiding something more sinister ,up to now tho looks as it was purely to avoid any leaks.Fortunately bought a new one in the sale. I have noticed on one site that a oil plug with magnet from Renault part no. R77 03 075 012 would do,assuming they are the same as the excel, good luck with it ,Trev.

Hi there, just done mine ,bit of struggle but won through. What I found was the fibre washer acts like a non slip mat so I cut that out as best I could using a junior hacksaw blade, hand held ,and a stanley knife, being aware of cutting towards the plug and not marking the sump face. You will not get all the way round but enough to free it.After trying various types of grips I reverted to 2lb lump hammer and chisel ,again utmost care is required, only do this if you trust yourself sufficiently as I accept no responsibility if you mess up. Also get plenty of WD 40 around it that helps, gently does it Trev

The Irwin nut / bolt removers are great for that job, one of my brass sump plugs was stuck fast, rounded on every corner, used the Irwin tool, it hardly even marked the plug despite how tough it was to remove.

p.s they're not very cheap , but approx

Trevor, that Renault p/no. R77 03 075 012 is for the magnetic transmission drain plug which is a direct replacement for the standard transmission plug. I've just fitted one when I changed the oil in my gearbox. (
