WEllison
Hi All; Anybody using the high torque ECU with boost set above stock level? I am comtemplating installing more efficient turbos and using an external boost controller set to a max of 0.9 bar in my 2000 V8 using the high torque ECU. My concern, will the ECU generate a check engine light? Specifically a P1412 error, this is the long term "learns" being to high or low. Thanks for any input, Wayne Quote The Older I get the Faster I was

Thanks for any input, Wayne Wayne...don't know about other ECU but I bought Johan's Hi-Torque + Race ECU, I did not trigger any engine errors. I ran the car for about 20 miles to learn the new configuration. I also changed the wastegate to 14psi spring. I set the wastegate to 7 psi and hit all the way to one bar when the solenoid (hot) is working. Johan's ECU will compensate to accomudate air/fuel ratio at higher boost. Before you upgrade the turbo, try to reach 0.9 bar by changing your wastegate spring.
TEAM MAG
I also have Johan's chip. I'm using a manual boost controller set inline after the solenoid with the stock wastegate springs. It's adjustable up to 1BAR and it works great. Install a boost gauge first and make sure it is accurate!

Thanks for any input, Wayne Thanks everyone for the responses so far. Almost everyone using a boost controller is also using Johann's ECU. I don't know if he has ( or Lotus) disabled the logic which generates a P1412 error in the stock or high torque ECU. I was hoping someone has already tried an external boost controller with the stock or high torque ECU. I can always disconnect the plenum line to the capsules and monitor MAP, but I would rather not. peter_england99
Wayne, I've had a P1412 with Markus' Red Race ECU and stronger springs in the forge wastegates (yellow). I'm going to change back to the weaker springs (green). Regards, Peter.

Thanks for any input, Wayne Hi like the lads have said I also have Johan's ECU..that was March 05. My car is now project Sport 500..... engine fitted with JE Piston's..sitting is stand at the moment...waiting for custom Crank Bearings from JAE parts...have Apexi AVC-R boost controller fitted un tested as yet....plus Boost/ Oil temp gauge from LA... have new Hybrid Turbo's with 16psi waste gates...Not going to fit these now..plan to fit 10PSI ones before it runs hard...will run the Engine in with stock weak ones...Oh Yes twin Inter Cooled...Plan to use better gearbox maybe 6 speed........cheers Rob Quote damfast35nut@talktalk.net or 07976 609881

Thanks for any input, Wayne I have Johan's red ECU with an aftermarket boost controler and upgraded turbos. I drove the car all summer with the boost ranging from 0.9 to 1.1 Bar. I received a P1412 error once, mid season. Not a particularly hard run. It was a warmer day, which usually means lower boost. I was confused. Not likely helpful, but certainly an additional data point. DBredS4
so how do they go? all this boost and chargecooled too, must really fly. have you worn out the rear tyres yet?
mike_sekinger
Since I collected my car from Mike Haines, I have been trying out different wastegate actuator spring selection and boost settings. With 9-15psi springs that car is insanely fast with approx. 1 bar boost, but the power delivery is not particularly smooth. I have since returned to the 10psi springs and driveability is definately improved as a result. The rear tyres are holding up very well, but hard acceleration on anything other than super smooth road gives rise to breaks in traction. Driving like this, I would be quite worried about the driveshafts with hopping.... There are some great sections of Autobahn between my home and the office and the car is very easy to bring to 160+mph. The downforce is very interesting at high speed - the car really is planted to the road. I have also experimented with removing the huge rear wing and there is a noticeable reduction in drag. Cheers, Mike S so how do they go? all this boost and chargecooled too, must really fly. have you worn out the rear tyres yet? rwiggins951
To Mike's point, I too was concerned about driveline life with the aggressive boost curve. I did change the steepness of the cuve on my boost controller. I belive my wastegate capsules are set in the 10-12psi range so I only had so much adjustability. Turning down the steepness of the boost curve helped with traction and made power a bit more linear. Incidentally, I did let the president of our local Lotus club drive my car on one of our favorite twisty road events. The car was set at 1bar. He races carts and drives a beautiful and wickedly entertaining Caterham, so I figured he'd be fine. Long before I was done enjoying the Caterham, he asked that we switch back stating that he was just too frightened by the car. He said he just could not get comfortable with how quickly (too much) power was available. Everything is relative I suppose. My memory is fading a bit, but the boost curve adjustment may be the change that prevented the overboost check engine light from being triggered. gmendoza
My memory is fading a bit, but the boost curve adjustment may be the change that prevented the overboost check engine light from being triggered. That is very likely. I too had that code with an agressive boost curve resulting in boost spikes. Now with the new curve and no more boost spikes, I haven't had that code in almost a year. Iceman
I also have Johan's Race ECU, Reflowed Turbos, Blitz Boost Controller and Meth Injection (along with some other goodies...). I've never had any code errors. I did have some idling issues after the Meth injection install, but after "properly" hard resetting the ECU and letting it "properly" cycle 5-5-5-5 times, it's been smooth ever since. I have also lost a bit of traction once or twice on a hard acceleration, but my rear tires aren't that good, so I'll say it's due to that. As for power, MAN, I have to say it's Orgasmic!! My wastegates bottom out at 11.5 PSI. When doing spirited runs, I normally run around 14-15 PSI, with my Meth kicking in at 8 psi (around 100 psi at the pump). According to another exact Esprit running at a much higher altitude and same upgrades, as per his dyno, he was doing about 420-430 RWHP... That's about 500 HP at the Crank... NICE!! After installing an A/F controller, he did 512 RWHP (Yes, Rear wheel HP!). That's approx. over 600HP at the crank!! The car runs great to this day.
