S4s clutch release bearing

Righto - I’m proper bloody confused this is the bearing which is with my car

The bearing itself removes from this assembly by undoing the clip2D0647DE-A1C3-41EC-8B3D-79257B6F7DE3.thumb.jpeg.2fac4021a5da7bd4cca1698dcc100cfa.jpeg

sj sports list a replacement assembly and a bearing. The assembly looks noticeably different. The bearing requires you to press put the middle and reuse. The middle of the above bearing does not press out - tried on a press - trust me it’s a one piece thing.

everything I can find simply doesn’t look right - I can’t be the only person to have had this issue  - help

Upgrade today to remove Google ads and support TLF.

? it’s starting to piss me off slightly........ I just want to know what I’ve got in my heap of bits.... and put the right part back on.  This seems harder than it should be.

Yup.  As far as I'm aware they're all the same from 1988 on for 4cyls apart from S300/S4s.  I think PNM's solution is a good 'un.  If SJ sells the individual replacement bearing, then it must be interchangeable!  Unless yours is fitted with something different..?

The kit is a helix kit and has come from SJ so I’ve found out tonight. I’m guessing I need to buy a proper assembly as the fingers on the old pressure plate were nearly worn off

Are you taking any notice of what I'm saying? It's like talking to the wife, FFS!

Did you look up the bearing number I gave you? 600407 ORS - that is the S4 bearing.

I've found the photos of the disassembled bearings, so pick the bones out of these - you should be able to see that the S4 has 'special' ORS bearing with a protruding centre. The S4s has a separate machined stepped tube that fits inside the bearing as can be seen in the last photo - that's the protrusion. There is also a plain flat spacer in there.

What bearing numbers do you have?

Thanks @Chillidoggy - it’s looking like the bearing I currently have is a gt3 bearing set - which is significantly cheaper on deroure £88 vs £360. The step simply doesn’t push out and it’s definitely differently. That might explain the terrible wear on the old pressure plate fingers

I don’t have any spacer shim thing either

Righto - the one I have is a gt3 bearing. Apparently they are dimensionally the same as the S4s one. 

Got bored of looking at bearings now - and have just ordered a replacement one from SJ

So, to clear up the S4s bearing mystery once and for all, it has a 61908-2RZ bearing, a thrust washer with a recessed seat for the specially-machined tube, as per the photo below.

The S4 release bearing on the other hand is 600407 ORS and it already has an extra-long inner, so doesn't require the machined tube.

Did you measure up the bearing lengths?

62mm across

37mm hole

14mm tall on the wider flat bit

21mm tall overall. Insert is about 7mm

the old fingers where the nose of this bearing sits is really badly worn. I just want the correct bloody thing in there so I don’t need to bugger about with it.

If I get in the garage tomorrow, I’ll see if I can measure up what I have. I can’t think why the S4 and S4s release bearings should be different, unless as I said, the clutches come up different lengths.

Cheers - I think the S4s clutch assembly sticks out more - dunno how true that is - but that’s my understanding
