Lotus Essex jacket (info)

Recommended Posts

Hello

im looking for some advice on this jacket (pic included )

this jacket was given to me when I was about 9 from someone that worked for lotus but told us nothing about the jacket I have had it over 20+ years I have worn it once and then it went into storage

I have searched the Internet but all I can find out is its from the late 70s early 80s so thought I would ask on here as someone must have another like this or might now the value of it

thanks in advance

I believe @Veilside has one to go with his Essex. Probably worth quite a lot to a Lotus fan but things like that can slip by one ebay unnoticed, bit of a lottery.

You could start an auction on here and see where it goes! What size is the jacket?

Yes free classified section here: https://www.lotusforsale.com/

If it's really mint and well preserved I'm sure it would fetch a good price. I'd be interested myself.

That'll fetch big money Alfie - Steve T does have one. I seem to recall Clive Chapman saying he had a load of Essex kit in the loft at East Carleton. I'll give ya £50 for it! :)

On average a good Essex jacket on EBay will make £500 to £700 but with a broken zip could be less, not  a good idea to put it in the washing m/c. though.

A few years ago the Silverstone Classic auction had an Essex lot that went for nothing so to speak, Essex jackets, Essex umbrellas, Essex travel bags etc. etc. the winning bid was around £350 or thereabouts that really hurt as I didn’t find out until it was to late, Essex umbrella’s are even harder to find than the jackets I’ve got a couple but the condition isn’t great maybe Classis Team Lotus should commission a batch of replica’s.

Thanks for your reply

the badge doesn't match the ones in my original photo does that matter? I really don't know anything about lotus memorabilia. I'm tempted to upload it to eBay but couldn't find another one on there  so couldn't estimate a price but there's a apart of me that wants to keep hold of it coz it's been with me for 20+ years

Alfie,

Your Jacket is the same as the ones in the press photo,  Just looks like the previous owner of your Jacket moved the stitched on lotus emblem badge from above the pocket and stitched it back on the pocket imo

The Essex badge is where it should be along with the round emblem, I have two jackets one as your photo with the round badge in the same position and the other one doesn’t have one, is the zip repairable without replacing the zip ? take it to someone who repairs/replaces zips see what the say, you really need the zip working but replacing the zip could spoil the jacket so be careful.

Forgot to mention the round yellow and green lotus emblem in the photo isn’t standard for Essex jackets.

Huh

The roundels seem to be in different locations on different jackets.

@Myscoobysfaster - Looking good for the position of your badge.

Would not  exactly be period correct but it is a simple design,  If folks want these and do not want to fork out the price/search for such a rare item,  Why not look into a group order, plenty of companies would remake this jacket in a sizes and in small orders also for the folks that would like one  :)

David Thieme who 'was' Essex Petroleum. And yes that's Thatcher who had one of the Essex Esprits along with Hazel Chapman and the French journalist Jabby Crombac
