Esprit S2 PROJECT ON EBAY.

Recommended Posts

Currently on ebay a 1980 esprit S2,  at 7k at the moment with 6 days still to go,   The engine has been replaced by a modernish rover twin cam unit,   looks like it needs a fair bit of work, but complete by the looks of it other than the engine swop.

Chassis would concern me going of the pictures given the tin worm looks like it has taken hold on the chassis section tubes,  However could be a really nice project for folks to get their teeth into.  Not many about for sale now as projects, and lets face it, they are probably one of the best looking esprit models :)

Hope the project ends up on the forums,

Did he do the conversion or was it already done ?   My concerns would be the scabby chassis, but could be surface rust, just a little to scabby in the pictures though for my liking.  That said still an excellent project as it seems very complete and unmolested apart from the engine

Our resedent s2 bloodhound Matt is probably already hitching up his trailer ready to go and fetch it knowing him :)

Could be just that side of the car was left exposed to the elements, the rest of the chassis that's visible in other photos doesn't look terrible. Didn't @Paul Coleman replace chassis tubes [beautifully] himself? The old bad jacking chestnut is evident too btw. [The interior looks very saveable although owner Steve reckons seats need retrim], the K-series is as faithful a conversion as I can think of - has a Lotus connection, is a tuneable all alu L4 and it may even over heat. ;)

It's an Esprit S2, with it's original interior. It's a perfect project and I don't see any reason why it wouldn't make a beautiful car in the right hands. Last project S2 made £13k at auction sometime in '17.

Certainly did although I must confess I didn't fully weld it. I just tacked it with my MIG and then paid a professional welder to TIG it as I didn't trust my welding to that particular job!

Welcome to the Forums Neil,

To walk away with that S2 for 7K was a good purchase price for a complete unmolested car apart from the obvious rover engine, well done

Get on the phone to Mike  at lotusbits,    www.lotusbits.com and he can sort you straight out. you have the choice of buying a used lump off him or you can have one of his used ones rebuilt to your spec, all depends on your project budget.

Regarding the rover conversion , This was the first one i have ever seen in a lotus esprit, it may be worth you removing it carefully and selling it on as a kit as the hard work has already been done regarding the gearbox/engine adaptor plate etc, so some folks may be intrested maybe.

May be worth pulling the bodyshell off this car to give the chassis a very good inspection, and if it does turn out to be just surface rust,  you can zinc primer and give it a good coat of chassis paint all oiver in all the nooks and crannies to provide decent protection for the future :)

Will make working on the suspension, brakes engine removal so much easier in the long run, just depends on how much work area you have to work with.

Best of luck with the project and look forward to the updates,  may be sad looking at the moment but when restored the S2 is by far the best looking esprit model by a long shot imo,

Also worth getting a birth certificate for it from lotus archives,  become a gold forum member and you get one thrown in with the deal.

A lot of the folks on here know the cars inside out and then some,  friendly and always there to offer advise or to help find hard to find parts etc, no question is ever to stupid either.

See Mattwatts on these forums as he is one of the resident S2 gurus and has even had some rare parts remade for the S2.

Hey don't forget my... err... strip down videos Dan

Congrats Neil! Great project there, here's to getting it on the boil. Hey I know I'm only going on photos but do your best to save that interior, the leather is replaceable I suppose but it looks good apart from a few lose stitches. It's the dash material you can't get. It's called Marcasite. You can't get it though, did I say that?

I'd guess that's the first K conversion anyone's seen here. Smart conversion but yeah 907 all the way. You shouldn't find it difficult to get one, they're in Eclats, Elites and Jensen Healeys.

Good luck man!

Hello @Customseve

As @silverfrost says it's a good idea to take the body off and sort out the chassis etc.

Not sure of the feasibility of that, given the current ceiling price of S2s, but it certainly isn't difficult, and the method of restoration can be adapted per budget.

I've just completely stripped and rebuilt an S1 in similar condition over the past 18 months, and the results are looking like a new car. Though the chassis was better and it had the 907 engine and gearbox etc.

Good luck.

From those pics the paintwork looks  to be very good,  But that front bumper , front valance and sills would look a million times better by painting them satin black  :)

As George says mirrors will be hard to find and expensive too.

Tell you what though, if you've a full set those Goodyear NCT's it's a bit of a win imo. Neither Goodyear or any other big name rubber have made tyres in Giugiaro Esprit sizes in a very long time. Course they're too old to use other than for display purposes, but having them isn't such a bad thing in that respect.
