OMFG - What have I gone and done that for.........

Recommended Posts

Very exciting news although I can relate to the connection to the outgoing car. Saying goodbye to my V6 Cup wasn't easy at all, when you have a good one and so many good memories it's always mixed emotions.

The replacement will be special, it would have to be to tempt you out of a well loved car.

Looking forward to some more revealing pictures soon!

Is the plan to pick up next Friday? If so I think we should put together a welcoming committee.

Yup. Next Friday afternoon is the date. Can't wait.

I came into this world screaming and covered in someone elses blood. I'll probably leave it in the same way.

Has Lazy D still got his?

As far as I'm aware, yes - or at least he still had it when we passed each other about 5 months ago.

Maybe Andy’s just found religion? Who needs a sports car in the garage when you have the glory of The Easter Bunny in your heart!

Or maybe he part ex’d the the S1 for a gearstick at current Lotus prices! :D

OK, plans are now advancing well for the pickup, assuming nothing goes wrong, of the new car.

Friday afternoon around 1600-1630 I pick her up depending on traffic. According to google maps, with the weekend routes I have planned to get to know her (two lovely manor house type hotels booked to park her outside of) by the time I get home I make it 750 miles!  That's 3/4's of the way through the running in period in one weekend.

Oh lordy......  What a treat. Me, the new car, great roads, great hotels, great food and wine and no female distractions. Heaven, I've arrived.....

Is it actually that car? I'm not convinced a tight arsed Scotsman would take the initial depreciation hit given the advertised price in comparison to the new GT410 - you could buy one of those with a few options (inc Ohlins) for that price I would've thought. Also, a man who loves his recaros as much as @C8RKH is going to find those seats a problem...

I have a spare set of Recaros. They are that good....

The Recaro's are perfect IMHO and are much nicer than the Sparco's and in my ideal spec I would love a GT410, MSG with red accents of course ;) ,  and the Recaro's fitted although have been led to believe they don't fit without some modification not to mention homologation...

I was at Lotus a few months back and they have some MY11 Evora Recaro's made into seating in the reception area and sitting in them reminded me how much I miss them over the Sparco's that I had just spend several hours in driving up!

So, my first main run in the car for four months as she has been in tucked up in hibernation in the heated garage, under her TLF fleecey cover (probably up for sale soon inthe classifieds) all winter, since early November.  Unhook the battery conditioner and she fires in to life first time. What a girl.

6.5 hours later, I have completed a 380 mile journey down to Telford (one tank of fuel and not yet empty, the only fill up needed was me for coffee!), where I'll be based for the next 3 days on a training course - I wish the Trainers all the best in trying to teach this old dog some new tricks.  These days i struggle to even cock my leg over for a pee!

Get out the of car at the end of the journey and feel great. No aches. No pains. No "ear buzz". Nothing. Averaged 32mpg which is not bad. The car handled everything from torrential rain, high winds, snow and sleet (in Scotland) to sunshine (literally as I drove over the Border at Gretna Green into England the sun came out from behind the clouds and bathed me in warmth!  Stayed warm and dry for the rest of the journey. Had a couple of "squiggly moments" with the car and standing water - rear tyres must be getting quite low on tread now.

Those Recaro's are just fab. Really comfortable seats. And boy, the Evora just eats up the miles and really is a great GT car.  Once you are in and cocooned in the "tub" you do feel really special. Smug even.

Friday is approaching and I am having more than a number of thoughts as to whether I have done the right thing. The car just ticked over the 25k miles during the journey. I mean, after almost 8 years, it is barely just run in! OMFG. What have I done....

The Evora is overlooked for many reasons, as a GT car in particular. Somehow Lotus have acquired this reputation for making "tough, uncompromising, uncomfortable cars" when I think even the Elise is relatively comfy.

The Evora's a far better GT car than an Aston of the same period IMHO, certainly a Vantage anyway....

Weather's looking good, a very big day for you Andy, enjoy every minute.

Saying goodbye the S1 won't be easy but I can already picture the smile when you set off in the new one, nostrils full of the fine aroma of Hethel resin! Remember you have to run this one in! That won't be a chore though. The car is shot through with poise and richly detailed communication, an absolute joy fast or slow, on any road. A fast car you don't have to wait for the autobahn or track to enjoy. I predict you will arrive home wondering how on earth they are any left on sale. And yes, there's something very special about your chosen model of Evora. Some indescribable 'just so' rightness about it that nothing Lotus has released since has diminished. Not everyone 'gets it' but that's their loss. Once they hand you the keys and you head north with the entire UK road network now your own personal playground, you're going to 'get it' in no uncertain terms!

We will have to insist on pictures and lots of them. If you can ever be persuaded to pull over and stop driving it for a second. Easier said than done!

Wish I could be up there to see you off. Just can't make it work today. We're all getting to the point that we won't be buying too many more manual, ICE sports cars from new so it really is an experience to drink in and savour.
