Don't know about UK rules.

 

But here in the USA you can still obtain R12 (the original refrigerant), and it cools better than R134.

Don't even think about the newest gas R1234yf.

Crack cocaine is probably easier to get and less expensive and less illegal than R12 in the UK. 

R134a is the one, until they ban that as well, which is happening at some point. To go from R12 to R134a the system has to be flushed out ideally and the correct oil put in. Also replace receiver/dryer.

R134a has increased in price by 8x over the last year. Mainly to bring it inline with the cost of the newer gases used in new cars
