Turbo Oil And Cooling Lines

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Has anyone replaced the turbo oil feed and cooling pipes with s/s items?

It seems a simple thing to do but as yet it would appear no one has them tooled up.

Pete at PNM was going to have them available last year and after a few reminders still no word from him.

Geoff at Esprit Eng. has asked his local supplier of Aeroquip to make some to a set of pattern parts . result zilch in the progress dept.

Looks like we could do with a friendly aero engineer / V8 owner to pattern and tool up these items. who do we have 'On the Books' ???

I am rather loathe to replace them with the standard short life plated items.

I would also be interested in a proper set of braided feed/return pipes - this was on my to-do list

I have a complete new set of brand new turbo feed/return pipes for oil and coolant and I would be happy to send these to Simons guy, so that he could run-up a number of sets.

@Simon: Can you ask your guy if he is happy to provide his address and I

Hi Guys

Just spoken to my mate and he said its not a problem as long as he has the original as a pattern for length, threds etc.....

Mike you have a PM

Its up to you guys then how you want to play it, as he said to me, some of you may want annodised ally ends, some may want stainless, some may want the pipes a little longer or shorter to route them slightly differnt to original....

All of the above is not a problem as long as he has the end thread measurments and then he can make them up to whatever spec u like...

Thanks for the details Simon.

I would like annodised alloy ends in the traditional blue and red colouring, if possible.

Regards,

Mike S

Just one small query.........

Are we OK with alloy unions ( Threaded male fittings ) going into an ultra hot iron ( steel ?) turbo housing ?

Or should we be looking at SS fittings for compatibility ?

Any metallurgists out there ?

Right guys and dolls......

These oil and coolant lines should be available from late next week......

Many thanks to Rob C for supplying the pattern parts from which the replacement will be made....

Please either contact myself or Mark at Pipelines motorsports 07766556334 (same supplier as the clutch and brake hoses) for more information...

Price is not yet know but will be updated next week...

Well done Simon. I'm sure there will be quite a few interested in these, me included.

Another instance of people improving our cars as and where they can.

Great news.

I've replaced them with S/S lines and Earl's/Aeroquip fittings. Don't know if you guys can get those in the UK. I can put together a "kit" to sell and install instructions (without pics) to sell.

Be sure to do your homework on oil feed orifices! You may be wasting oil pressure, and risking oil seal compromise, in some cases, when the opening is too large. You may be surprised how small they can be depending on the type of turbo bearing.

My oil and water pipes are looking dodgy now so I want to replace.

Welcome update from people on potential sources of these and prices.

I think PNM may be doing them now - anyone have any experience and price for these?

Have Pipelines prepared a kit, and what do people recommend between alloy and stainless unions?

Do Lotus supply OEM or will they also rust through in another 10 years?

Hi,

Mark at Pipelines prepared a kit of parts, but you will have to make the hose lengths and terminations yourself.

The price of the parts are pretty high and increase upwards if you opt for stainless, as opposed to steel plated unions. Mark will be able to give you the price of the options, but don´t expect any change from 600GBP.

The end result was very satisfying though.

The OEM hoses are also not cheap and will naturally suffer the same fate over time.

Mike/All,

So how did all this unfold? Do we have a supply of pipes or is it back to Lotus for original items and replace every 10 years, which in all honesty isn't that bad.

Trevor.

I'll get around to it at some point.

Hi Trev,

If you can get the standard OE turbo hoses to last 10 years you have done very well. Depending on the usage pattern of the vehicle, they can need replacing after a couple of years.

There are no ´off the shelf´ alternatives ready made up that you can buy. You can obtain the parts necessary to make up the hoses from Mark at Pipeline Motorsports - I think that Bibs has a discount arrangement as well. If you don´t want to be bothered to make up the hoses, then you are probably best sticking with the OE versions.

Cheers,

Mike S

Mike thanks. I got the 10 years from an earlier post somewhere and assumed mine were original and the car is 12 years old. Oh well will have to consider my options.

I'll get around to it at some point.

Mine didn't quite make it. Went in for the annual A service last week and the coolant pipe on the LH turbo let go during the test drive after the service was complete.

Currently being dismantled at the dealer and having oil and coolant pipes replaced. (and all those corroded manifold bolts....)
