Squeak of the year

Recommended Posts

It's loud, it's annoying, sounds like rubber on leather.  Found out where it is coming from - where the centre console meets the front bulkhead at 45 degrees (it looks really cool, how come you can only see it when you're laid out flat in the foot well?), if you grab it and rock it - that's the squeak.

Any idea how to stop it, driving me mad, sounds like I'm in a toy car.

Wot? You saying that my poetical speak doesn't paint an exact mental image?   Ok, you win, flagrant steal from Google with an artistic yellow oval - you force that bit back and forth and it squeaks!  Loudly. Annoyingly. Frequently.

I had a maddening squeak on a long cross country journey, seemed to be coming from just behind the dash or just under the steering column.

After some precise thumps of a fist, it refused to quieten down. In a moment of inspiration I put the heating on full and directed it to the floor and face level vents, but closed the face level vents in the hope hot air would leak around the under dash area and soften some plastic/leather interface.

It worked, but not a suitable fix for the summer, I will investigate this area you've highlighted too, good luck.

I have one of those too!  Sounds like a piece of plastic being rattled in a plastic cup, turn  on the heating and it vanishes  🙂

I understand that you can get special lubricant that doesn't degrade rubber.

See above - I've ordered the WD40 PTFE specialist non-friction version

I have one on course road surface that sounds like its the center air vent. I'm considering removing the ALPINE unit and looking behind it but as suggested it may be the center console.

I’ve been studying the 400 parts book to see how the interior is held together. Besides hidden screws there are blade type clips which are a bit scary to release. Any tips on releasing them?

I bought a full set so will start to explore. I also have a mechanics stethoscope, just need to borrow another set of fully functioning ears

Ha!  Mechanic thought it was a seat but turned out to be right hand side front suspension - 2 kilos of grease and now squeakless

I think I have the exact-same problem. What bits needed greasing, do you know?
