Engine pre oiling procedure on dry sump after re-build

Recommended Posts

Hi guys I have a 1981 Esprit Turbo dry sump, which has had a full engine overhaul with all new bearing ect, and I’m looking for advice on pre lubricating the engine before it’s first start up after the re-build.

ive seen bits and pieces on here of different ways to do this, but just wanted to get the correct way before doing so.

Thanks in advance

On my engine we pulled the scavenge pump drive belt off from the pump side and used a drilling machine to produce pressure. My engine was out from the car and we used a selfmade dry sump tank from my engine rebuilder. After a few seconds the gauge showed pressure.

BTW the sump tank should be in higher position as it is in the car too and not on the ground.Thats what we have found out.

Thanks I’ll give that a go,

the engine is back in the car so tank height isn’t an issue, just didint want to start it dry and mess all the good work done on the engine 🙄

Excuse my confusion but doesn't the scavenge pump just fill the oil tank, it's the main pump that supplies oil to the bearings under pressure? 😕

No,The scavenge pump have three rotors. Two for scavenge and one for pressure. The main pump is a bit different as the one from the wet sumps.

It would be great to have the dry sump Turbo details for the dry Sump database, have a look in general Esprit chat, you will see the register and where your car fits in.

cheers,
