MD355
@mike_sekinger Thanks for the excellent explanation !! I now realize the importance of the intercooler / chargecooler... It is not so much the maximum power that is important in the Esprit V8, but the availability of the power all the time.. When things get hot in the intake it appears as if the wastegate opens and releases turbo pressure (my guess) , in combination with what you mention about dumping extra fuel to cool down the intake.. Which drops performance and makes the motor feel kind of sluggish sometimes.. Very annoying.. I also agree 100% with setting goals... For instance my goal would be : -to retain boot space -make the intercooler / chargecooler look like factory -keep the cost at reasonable level -maybe make this a reversible modification just in case I decide to remove this in the future (unlikely, but still no cutting of body parts is preferable) So I have carefully been reading the ProAlloy thread and it seems that the company is having hard time to deliver the kits.. Any suggestions / alternatives ? Thanks !!
mike_sekinger
In your situation, I would suggest a water/methanol injection kit. 1 Quote 1996 Esprit V8, 1998 Esprit V8 GT, 1999 Esprit S350 #002 (Esprit GT1 replica project), 1996 Esprit V8 GT1 (chassis 114-001), 1992 Lotus Omega (927E), 1999 Esprit V8SE, 1999 Esprit S350 #032, 1995 Esprit S4s, 1999 Esprit V8 GT (ex-5th Gear project), 1999 Esprit V8SE ('02 rear) 1999 S350 #002 Esprit GT1 replica
MD355
Thanks @mike_sekinger I know this might be too much asking, but any suggestion which water/methanol injection kit to buy for the Esprit V8 ? Anyone have any good experience with a specific system ? Thanks !!
mike_sekinger
There are various kits, but are very similar. MD355
It would be interesting and it would help a lot if Esprit V8 owners could talk about their before / after experience with the follow : 1) Intercooler before / after 2) Chargecooler before / after 3) Methanol Injection kit before / after Feel free to share with us your experience.. Thanks !!
mike_sekinger
I don`t think that many people will have empirical data for you. If you are after dyno data I can share that for a water-air chargecooled set-up at different boost levels: - stock boost 405bhp 330lb/ft - 1 bar boost 469bhp 384lb/ft - 1.2 bar boost 508bhp 437lb/ft Of course, not all systems are going to be identical but it give you an indication. This will also be affected by ambient temperature conditions. The key in my opinion is being able to produce more dependable power with some form of inlet temperature control, over the stock non-intercooled set-up. 1 Quote 1996 Esprit V8, 1998 Esprit V8 GT, 1999 Esprit S350 #002 (Esprit GT1 replica project), 1996 Esprit V8 GT1 (chassis 114-001), 1992 Lotus Omega (927E), 1999 Esprit V8SE, 1999 Esprit S350 #032, 1995 Esprit S4s, 1999 Esprit V8 GT (ex-5th Gear project), 1999 Esprit V8SE ('02 rear) 1999 S350 #002 Esprit GT1 replica
MD355
Besides the performance dyno data, which is very important, I would be interested to know on a daily drive situation, how the chargecooler makes the car's performance more consistent.. For instance, driving 20 miles, before installation of chargecooler performance would drop off after say 5 miles or in slower speeds, but with the chargecooler, would there be constant high boost power ? Thanks !!
mike_sekinger
You`re overthinking this. If you have inlet temperature control then the engine power output will not drop off in the same way. As the turbos make full boost, the intercooling will stop the inlet temperature from rising to the point that the ECU is triggered to take action being retarding the ignition advance and enriching the fuelling. The intercooling doesn`t make more boost or change your boost profile. There is no real magic here. MD355
You are probably right, I am probably overthinking about it.. While I understand the theory behind this modifications, what I wanted is more of a "magazine reviewer experience".. The so called "in the driver's seat" experience before and after the modifications.. Will I feel the difference on a daily basis when I drive the car ? How much % stronger does it feel in low / mid / high rpm (doesn't have to be exact just the feeling) ? Sometime without the intercooler/chargecooler my car feels like the engine is bogging down, saturated with fuel, not very responsive... Will this change with the addition of the chargecooler and rev faster and feel more responsive ? Thanks !!
mike_sekinger
Think of it this way - with intercooling, your engine is going to make more power and torque than it ever has without. Not just peak power, but throughout the whole rev range. Will it feel quicker and more responsive with more power and torque?... What do you think? For giggles, here is a short video of a chargecooled V8 running higher boost. MD355
@mike_sekinger Thank you again for your response !! As always you provide true valuable information for all of us here at the Lotus Esprit V8 forum !! I am convinced the chargecooler is the best modification for my car.. I will try to find someone here in Athens, Greece that deals with chargecoolers that can fabricate a custom solution for me.. In the meantime, I tried watching your video but I get this message "We could not locate the item you are trying to view."

lotuslover1
hi i have recently added a further two more fans (total of 4 now) in a push/pull setup. The top two fans push the air into the intercooler and the bottom two suck or pull. This has made the intercoolers more effecient now,and theres consistant power when compared with before.
