Bumper Repair - Paintwork

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

I need to get some bumper damage repaired and my front GRP bumper repainted. anyone have any tips or advice as to whom to take this to? im based W London way.

Ive been to see specialised paint in reading whom appear to have a good reputation but £480 to remove front bumper, repair, sand, paint reattach seems pretty strong - plus the old VAT adage.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

That's nufffin compared to how much your ARB bushes are gonna cost.

British Fart to Florida, Nude to New York, Dunce to Denmark, Numpty to Newfoundland.  And Shitfaced Silly Sod to Sweden.

You sir are a rascal!

Hi Barry,

thats through specialised in Reading. Have a more local quote of £530 too but that also includes the fibreglass repair to the bonnet bracket which has decided to splinter. Will give Option 1 a go

I guess that depending on the quality of finish you need and how handy you are with filler/sanding/rattle can determines how much you need to spend.

I'm strictly an amateur that has  DIY patched up body work before in my youth a few times. I recently repaired a dent on my Esprit rear bumper where they had damaged the top dropping the engine in/out together with some scrapes on the rear wheel arches. My bumper required some indentations/cracks filled and prepared for spraying - 5/10 difficulty.

I used black filler specifically for bumpers circa £10 and spray cans (I needed 2 x orders) from Ebay @ 2 x £30 per link below - one would have been enough for my bumper alone. I guess it also depends on whether they source your colour?

I feel that I got an 'excellent' colour match and finish from the paint and it was simple to mask of the bumper in situ (clear panel joins for masking tape to avoid join lines) and blended the paint in the repaired/primer areas with the existing paintwork e.g. I didn't spray the whole bumper completely only about half of it evenly either side of the middle where the damage was. On reflection it may have been easier to spray the whole bumper, but that would have required more paint.

When I applied the lacquer the 'ambient' conditions weren't great and I would rate my effort as only 8/10 for finish. However, my feeling is that this was plenty good enough for me for now and at some point I will get the whole back of the car sprayed professionally.  Had it not looked good with my DIY, efforts then I would have sought professional help sooner.

I don;t know how bad your bumper is, but if minor, you could risk £40-50 and your time patching it up, but if you are hopeless with paint cans or want a perfect finish, dig deep 'West End Prices' and leave it to the professionals.

P.S. The guy I bought from claimed he'd been quoted £200 for the bumper repair at a paint workshop in Canvey Island - but that could have been just to encourage me to buy it!

S3 are fibreglass so more difficult. I re-did my rear bumper once, a lot of sanding, filling, sanding etc. and I was v pleased with the finish. I then reversed it into a bollard a day later. Such is life.
