TE fuel tank replacement

Recommended Posts

Just taking out the RH tank from an '85 TE.  I think this one qualifies for my black museum.

Yes, 4.5 fecking gallons (ask me how I know), and it'd just been to Goodwood and back!

Wowzers. Surely it must have smelt like a refinery?!

Probably lucky the owner is not a smoker. Or at least I hope they are not a smoker....

He popped over for a quick check.  I opened my front door and told him he needed a tank without even looking at it!

Did you rub your chin and suck through your teeth before telling him the cost?

Mais naturellement!

Also found out why I got a big fuel bonus.  The sender float is 30% full of petrol.

70% air in there then. Always look on the bright side 🙂

He had a nice refreshing shower which finally got all the oil off his face and out of his hair.

I noticed that too, it’s a shame. But maybe their English isn’t as good as yours? Who knows.

This one's in for a fuel tank, speedo/indicator/hazard investigations, and MoT.

The tank is undoubtedly the worst I've ever pulled from a working Esprit.  Even cornering would've thrown fuel.  He's a lucky guy!

The bottom of the tank isn't bad at all.  Curiously, the float has liquid in it, but no evidence of damage.  Hey ho, new float on order...

The bottom of the tank does look pretty good, though.

That must have stunk to high heaven - by Christ he’s been lucky

You considered the POR15 treatment ?

Mate, that needs at least POR99.  I just find it hysterical that it went to Goodwood on one of the hottest days of the year before delivery to me!  They must have needed respirators.

Puts the leak I had in my Alfa Montreal in the shade.... mine only ended up like a colinder after cleaning up .... not beforehand!

When I get back today I'll run a wire brush over it, see what it's really like.

Finally finished the tank after getting hold of a banjo fitting for the feed. Photobombed by my GT3.

Then on to the bizarre behaviour of the hazards/indicators.  I won't bother explaining it in detail, but everything worked incorrectly except hazards with ignition off.  So, just to be thorough I swapped out both relays.  Turned out the flasher relay was incorrect, but inserting the correct one made it worse!  LH indicator operating permanently, and Xmas lights on the dash.  Removed and dismantled hazard switch, no problem found.  So, pretty much confirmed the issue was from the indicator stalk.

Shroud off then stalk out - I'm never happy to see this kind of thing, but in this case it turned out to be a false, ahem, lead - clearly a deleted alarm system.

And then, what may be the culprit!

IMAG0989-20180723-191652588.jpg

The switch assembly is in a fair mess, and that small split has made it quite unstable.  I'm convinced a new switch will solve the problem.
