Satnav options - phone vs window mount

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, as it looks like I'll be having my Lotus soon I need to look into satnav.

What do you use? Google maps, Waze or a stand-alone like Garmin etc?

I tried using a friends phone mount in the air vents but my S9+ is too heavy. So, do you have any recommendations?

I need satnav cause I'm bad with directions hahaha and I go to Plymouth fairly often from Bournemouth so need traffic updates and reroutes etc.

Thanks guys n gals!

I use an airvent mount for my phone and the Waze app. Waze is owned by Google these days so should benefit from a lot of their infrastructure, I'd have thought, adn has some nice features over and above the native Google app.The mount is a Halfords jobbie and is fine for my Pixel 2 XL. It's one of those W shape collapsible ones, but I cant' find a link to it. I'll keep looking.

I did use a standalone nav before, but they feel so old skool compared to the app offerings these days.

Was removes just after I took the pic.

I like “removable” mods, so the 3D printed part is easily removable and leaves no trace.

I bought the Co-Pilot app. Allows alot more way points than google maps. Used on my iphone with Quad Lock holder/case or can use an ipad whan I have a passenger. Specifically bought this app for my Alps tour in August/September.

Quad lock info....  https://www.quadlockcase.com/collections/shop-drive

Use this air vent mount on my ExIge and use Waze, as saved me many times re alerts of mobile speed cameras

Old skool here, still use a TomTom GO5100 stuck to the windscreen on the passenger side. My eyesight can’t cope so well anymore with a screen closer to me & then looking back up at the road!

Just done a Euro tour down to Switzerland & Italy with this set up. Passenger can send new destinations to the device whilst we are on the move using her iPhone & TomTom MyDrive, works well for us

I use the magnetic vent mounts too, very easy to use and my phone has never fallen off. Steel plate on the phone will probably prevent wireless charging but that’s only a problem if you use it, and there’s new types of mount the don’t block the coil.

waze is very handy, helpful reminder of the speed limit, your speed and where the cameras and problems are. Nice to get 10 seconds warning of a broken down car or debris in the road.

I have the steel plate right and the bottom of my S7 Edge and it wirelesses charges fine. Didn't work with it in the middle though.

Just back from a road trip to the Netherlands with my drivers group, taking in a track day at Zandvoort (more of that later - brilliant circuit) and realised I needed satnav rather than relying on close quarter convoy driving - have had real problems with Google maps on my HTC android phone so have just taken delivery of a TomTom 5200. Not sure how I am going to mount it yet but will have fun trying!

I use the Spigen Kuel H36 Car Phone Mount. It comes with a thin metal plate you put between your phone and the cover, and then it just sticks to the mount like magic.

I ended up with a cheap Amazon vent mount,  works well enough, now I just need to find a better charger than the USB on the bottom left of the car - needs more power to "fast charge"  as Waze drains my battery hahaha

@RoflOnMyWaffle be careful with cheap Amazon vent mount's possible internal metal strengthening elements - on mine they came through the rubber and scratched the vent quite significantly. It is just a poor design of the mount in my case and could have been prevented by covering each of the four "tentacles" with a soft film or something. I can't be bothered much as will just change the vent whenever suits me, but not having it scratched would probably be a better option.

Also charging from the standard USB outlet works fine in my case even with screen on navigation and WiFi hotspot on on Google Pixel.

And congratulations! 😊

I got this one, slides over and is a tight fit, but it'll just live in the car. No point removing it.

For £8 I thought I'd wing it, and bin it if it sucks xD

Its just a magnet which I stuck the metal plate to my phone case for a better connection rather than through the case. Very sturdy, did some enthusiastic moments leaving a few junctions as a test in the company car, didn't budge an inch.

Needed a phone mount in a hurry on Monday. Looped some Velcro through the air vent, wrapped some round the phone case and stuck together.

Surprisingly worked really well with the modification of a elastic band to keep the phone cover open.

Waze was good for a free app.

Used this for a long road trip all the way to Prague, worked extremely well. Doesn't fall off, can be swivelled for landscape view etc.

Also helped that we all had walkie talkies (Kirisun PT558) in case anyone in the convoy went out of view!
